Low body mass = higher resonance frequency = less bass.
The usual ways to cure this are:
1 - heavier strings (I use 0.45 on G but it is still weaker than the same gauge on my '62 Jazz)
2 - heavier bridge. I'm going to try this but I still haven't found a proper unit. There is a Shaller with adjustable string spacing and roller saddles, but it looks light and I'm not sure about it. There's also some noname bridge with built it piezo , maybe that's what I will try.

I have a Squire by Fender SQ MB-5, which was discontinued a few years ago.
Even though the bold Fender isn't on the headstock, it is still a Fender.
Does anyone have any information, such as schematic disagram of the SQ MB-5? :?:
I want to upgrade my MB-5 with new pickups. Any recommendations?

I've had EMG's on my MB-5 and it worked just fine. I would only check the size of the cavity before because the string spacing is different than that on regular jazz bass, I'm not sure any pu will fit. You can safely go for j-pickups with no exposed poles lie EMG or Bill Lawrence (rails).

I don't have a scheme for MB-5 but it should be a regular jazz bass hookup - volume, volume, tone.

Does anyone have any reliable information of the MB-5 Bass? :? :?:

When did these basses (both the Fender and the Squire) go into production and when (why) were they discontinued. :?: :?: :?:

It seems that if a particular model goes out of production, it falls through the cracks of history and so far into oblivion that historians, collectors and (worse yet) owners can't get such information as schematic diagrams, suitable replacement parts or any reliable answers to miscellaneous questions.   :( :?:  :!: :| :(

The Fender MB (Modern Bass) series were mass produced Japanese instruments based on the design of the Heartfield Project base models that were made in smaller volume at a slower pace than the Fender MB would be.

The MB's were introduced after Fender shut down the Heartfield brand which had been made at two different Fujigen Gaki factories. The bolt-on neck basses were made at Fujigen in Matsumoto while the premium neck-through models were made at Fujigen's Hirooka plant.

Yes the Heartfield division of Fender certainly did make produce some advanced instruments using the finest components available, had attentive quality control and their instruments incorporated some revolutionary features not seen before on basses such as an XLR direct out jack in addition to the tradition high impedance quarter-inch jack. They resembled higher end Ibanez and Yamaha basses because they were designed to compete head to head with them and win on fit, finish, sound, playability and versatility. They were sold under several different brand names, Heartfield, Heartfield by Fender and sometimes were labeled as full blown FENDER. Some of the best minds available in the business contributed to the design and production of Heartfield instruments. Their design team was truly a "dream team." Many would become Fender Custom Shop Master Builders.

The more recently discontinued Squire "Skull and Crossbones" MB bass was the last remaining trace of a Heartfield design, although a somewhat disappointing cheap approximation with flimsy hardware and electronics that left a lot to be desired.

The Heartfield basses, especially the high end ones are still unrivaled instruments today 22 years after they were introduced in 1989 and 18 years after FMIC pulled the plug in 1993. While superior instruments they usually sell at very reasonable prices and are almost always a bargain.

I put a nice heavy Kahler bridge on mine and it definitely improved the sustain.
