I'm a P guy, but I'd say go to your local shop and spend some time with a couple of each. Figure out which one sounds most like what you hear in your head, and plays most comfortably. That'll be the one you should go with.

Either bass would do just fine.

However, I'd say a J, because it's a more versatile intrument....and has a better neck.
But then again, P's can really thump!

If you want a wonderful compromise with the sound & feel, check out the Fender Reggie Hamilton Standard Jazz Bass. It has the precision pickup in the neck and a jazz pickup in the back. It will not sound exactly like a jazz bass, but very close. Though it will sound like a precision bass when you solo the neck (precision) pickup on. Also with this particular bass, it gives you a jazz bass neck (thinner). Lastly, it even has classic look.

Fender makes other basses with the precision/jazz pickup combination, notably the Fender Precision Bass Deluxe.

You can’t go wrong with any Fender bass you choose. Either flavor will give you a great sound.

A jazz or p? It all depends on the kind of sound that you want out of your Fender bass. If you want something more mellow and softer that delivers rich tone i would go with a Jazz bass. If you want something more twangy but stilll thick i would defineatly go with a Precision bass. If you like both but don't want two instruments, go with a Precision Active bass or a Jazz Active bass which allows you to have both sides or the tone in one bass without buying two basses. The active Jazz is a great bass and gets both sounds out really good. The Precision Active gives both sounds also but not as well as the Jazz. The Jazz encompasses those sounds beautifully and a deluxe Active Jazz is made in America and is 649.99 with a killer look to it. Good Luck on choosing!!

I've started on the jazz bass and I've had no complaints so far.

I like Jazz basses, although my '87 is misleading, being a P body with a J neck, but with both pups. I've almost bought a P Lite a few years back and a P Plus, I do like the P body better. Sound is all so personal, amp and guitar make your sound, and what sounds good to other, is your ability to play it well. Go to the music store and play a few in there that would meet your likes. Have fun!

DO NOT BUY FROM AN ONLINE STORE!!!

I can't stress this enough. Try it before you buy it. Go to your local music store; try a few models that they have in stock. If you find one you like; but you're not too fond of the colour. Search for that model online (either at a store site or [BEWARE] eBay).
---------------------

In the argument of P vs J. It depends on what type of music you play. Precision basses offer thinner strings and flatter frets. Jazz basses have raised strings (depending on bridge settings, they can be lowered) and are less maneuverable. The do, however, offer bigger overall sound, and seem to co-operate more with most sound systems.
---------------------
Here's a couple of quick pointers:

▪ Make sure the bass has at least two pickups in two seperate places.
▪ See if the store offers the Fender® Limited Lifetime Warranty.
▪ Stay away from the Fender® Big Block Precision Bass. The guitar only has one pickup, and it sounds like neither a Precision or Jazz bass. I fell victim to it's looks. Don't let yourself do this.
▪ As soon as you buy it, test it at your home (or wherever you play) to make sure that it works with your amplification/speaker setup.
▪ If the strings buzz, no problem. Just take it in to a specialist to get the bridge adjusted. Unless, of course, you can do it yourself.
▪ Just because it is expensive, doesn't mean it's good. Don't be fooled by the buyer's fallacy!

I agree with Brendon about not buying online. I've spent a few post here explaining how I feel about supporting my local economy, plus if gives the consumer a chance to try things out b4 buying.

As far as the BB Pbass, I have never played one, but a friend has one and his sounds excellent, kinda like a soapbar p/u would sound on my SoundGear string. Ultimately, it's what kind of sound you like. I read your post regarding problems with yours, there's a guy here that plays one - King Of Pain - he loves(d) his. You might have a bad example, take it back to the dealer to get it ck'd. Not doubting you, but maybe, just maybe, your bass can be fixed by the shop.

I've had good luck buying basses on line.
