Bought it back in the mid 90's, converted it to a B to B baritone using the G and C strings of a 6 string bass set and the A,D,G, &B strings of a Fender 10-46 set (ends up to be only just a little bit stiffer than the tension on my Strat). Top 2 tuners are Sperzel, the bridge pickup right now is a Carvin, but I'm thinking of trying Bartolinis (the stock Fender pickups get microphonic with any kind of gain).

Love this thing. Depending upon how you approach it, it can be a high bass or a Strat's big brother!

The original Bass VI's were more like the modern Baritone guitars, than the contemporary 6 string basses--but still kind of cool. I doubt I'll ever buy either, not my thing, but I'm all for people posting Bass VI pictures--and all for them being played as well.

'Believe there was a Japanese one a few years ago imported into the USA, maybe in '03 or so.

'Tried to score one a number of times and they all seemed to be gone.

Here's mine. Ordered from the C.S. in December of '08:

I just can't figure out why they put that goofy white guard on it.

My MIJ Bass VI, according to looing up the serial number, was made in 1996. Perhaps 2003 was the end of that particular run?

I think that the MIJ models were a single run in '96. As I understand it they brought in a run from Japan and they languished on the shelves. For years afterwards you could buy a N.O.S. Japanese VI for as little as $500; then the backlog was depleted and the prices went up. The last time I checked they were within $1,000 of the price of a Custom Shop model.

The Bass VI has always been a slow seller, yet there's always a few of us out here that want them. In '96 I had just changed jobs and was in no shape to buy one or I would have. I've been craving one since '67 and I finally ordered one last December. Thank goodness I did, they discontined them about a month later. Now I finally have one . . . but why did they put that dumb white pickguard on it?

That is truly a work of art in a bass. I'm not a huge fan of the tortoise shelll pickguards but this just looks classy from top to bottom, very nice.
