As seeing how you have a Jazz Bass now, and how you play alot of classic rock, it seems like you could/should get a P-bass. The new American Standard line of basses has received great reviews across the board. Bass Player magazine review.

The Lakland Darryl Jones you speak of would have to be from the Skyline series, given your spending amount. A close friend of mine swears by Lakland. He has two 55-94's and absolutely loves them. I have played his a few times but I just don't feel it yet. P-bass wise from Lakland is either the Bob Glaub or Duck Dunn models, with the major difference between them is the neck width.

One of my next bass acquistions will be a G&L L-2000. They look sharp and have a variety of tones available. The L-2000 has a cheaper "Tribute" series with fewer options available including neck sizes and colors.

Always keep an eye on the Used market. You can get an exceptional deal on a fantastic bass.

The Tribute's run for $700 now, after a recent price increase. The USA models start around $1100, and go up depending on options. They(not the voices in my head this time) say that the L-2000 is the "swiss army knife of basses", being able to come close to a Precision, Jazz, and Stingray sounds but not exact. Alot of tonal opportunities are available thanks to switches and knobs.

I have never played a G&L L-2000, hell I have never seen a L-2000 in person. I like the way they look, and all the reviews and comments lead me to believe that I will like it overall. However, once I do get to play on it will be the true test.
I am really into experimentation on the bass. I love to make bass sounds, but also love to make weird noises and what-not thru whatever methods that I can have at my disposal. The 2 P basses that I have get used for alot of my experimenting, as does the Rockbass, but I crave more resources. Basses, pedals, amps, anything.
Does any of this make sense?

Yes it does. I too went thru this some years a go. I found out for my self tho, that I like direct line to the amps, with adjusting the eq makes the sound I want. I do this with both active and passive basses, to get the same sound. I like that funky '70s sound for the hardcore music that I play. When I do the solos, I tend to funk it up a bit so the slap/pop sound it's there already.

I always think that the grass will be greener if I had.......

I have been playing alot of drums lately. A coworker was trying to sell his set for awhile but kept getting lowballed. He got fed up with it and was gonna give it to Goodwill, so I said that I would take it.
No stuff like free stuff.

Get a hollowbody Epiphone Jack Casady or the Ibanez Hollowbody Artcore bass is really, really killer. Best deal in the bass world bar none.

I don't think they are fully hollow (strip of wood mounted underneath pick ups) but they sound really nice.

For classic rock back at the time, I used a P-bass. Nowadays I also use a P-bass though also a Gibson SG reissue. Those two cover just about everything I remember from back in the day and they're also terrific for jazz and blues.

I've never played metal, so can't really say there but for anything classic, I don't think you can go wrong with a P!

I currently own 3 basses (technically 5, but two are on order for Christmas).

I own two Epiphone Thunderbirds which cost me around $600 (Canadian). They're wicked basses, lightweight, built like a tank, and have a thick sound.
There is no reason to mention my Yamaha. I havent picked it up in close to a year and there really isnt anything special about it. I used it as a beginner bass and didn't think anything of it... The only thing its good for is its strength from being dropped over the years...

I'm currently waiting for a Fender BG 29, $650 (Canadian) and a Fender Jaguar, $850 (Canadian).
I've tried both of these instruments before I ordered them. (The ones I played were floor models and had dents and scratches all over them).

It all depends on what type of music you play and your style.
I have a bass for each style and genre of music I play:
Epiphone Thunderbird IV - Alternative, Blues & Rock
Epiphone Gothic Thunderbird [Drop D Tuning] - Heavy Metal & Thrash
Fender BG 29 - Acoustic & Light Rock
Fender Jaguar - Blues & Jazz
