jlarocho, I don't fully understand what you last posted.
Below are pics of the P-bass special I have, a Prodigy bass,
and a standard fender precision.

The special and the prodigy both use a JP (or PJ if you prefer) style pickup
config with identical active electronics.
The standard precision (all the same as far as I have ever
seen from 70's till present) use the single center "staggered" P pickup only.
As far as necks the headstock style is similar on the special
and the prodigy, The difference is that my special is a 22 fret,
the prodigy and standard have 20. The shape and style
otherwise with all 3 are basically identical other then the
sharper contours and thiner body of the prodigy.

As far as not having pickguards in the 90's..other then
the prodigy what model of precision bass are you referring to?
All precision basses always used pickguards in the 90's and
pretty much any years? Other then the "lyte" series do
you have any pics of which p-basses that did not have pickguards?
I am curious now.

Thanks.

Beginning in 1990 Fender introduced the Plus series . They started with the Jazz Bass plus 5 string which featured active electronics , Lace sensor pickups no pickguards , downsized body , Pao ferro fretboards . Then they introduced the Jazz bass plus 4 string . It had a reduced headstock shape , decals were redesigned , no pickguard . The Precision plus followed with the same treatment. You can find this information in the book "The Fender Bass Book " by J.W. Black and Albert Molinaro , pages 82 and 83 . These basses resemble the shape of your bass .

ally, I think cowpoke is a nickname for these
and I have seen these style basses called cowpokes
in other posts as well. But officially from
Fender themselves it is a P-bass special, well
I already left all the specs. And yes it does sound great,
well at least the best sounding bass I ever owned or played...
hence it's a keeper.

And to jlarocho, this "fender plus" series you
speak of..even harder to find any info or pics on
those then my bass..it is certainly a rare series.
I thought by your previous post that every P bass
from the 90's had no pickguard. It seems all P-basses
do except for a very very rare limited few. I found a few
pics of 90's "plus" series online after a vigorous search..
seems they were models of jazz or precision with
active pickups. I saw one 5 string model that didn't have a
pick guard but all the 4 string models seemed to have a
pick guard and looked like any other P bass other then a JP
setup w/ actives and an additional switch.

I will get a copy of that book you mention but I have a
feeling the ones without pickguards are very rare..as far as
them "resembling" my bass....well actually my bass is not
only "similar" to a standard P...it is IDENTICAL to a standard P...
with a strange pickguard "cowpoke lol" and active elctronics..
well I left the specs etc in previous posts. Mystery solved with my bass...but now I am curious about these "plus" series...

Any pics of those ?......

I know thanks, can't wait to read it. The only book I have on guitars here is a Gibson book given to me as a gift..that is getting re-gifted lol.

to ebaysux.on the prodigy bass you have, the neck that starts withN1,and says made in U.S.A,is the real original neck:,.. All prodigy"s came with the marking:s,as far as the pick guard, they never came with one ,although they did make a kind of half one,it covered the jazz pickup and the controls, this was a after market pickup guard, the are hard to find and no longer made, very rare guard. It came with tandem pots,(stacked)just like the 1960 jazz bass had (made in 1960)the neck should be tapered, like the jazz neck.If you want more info ,drop me a line. They say the prodigy was made in Mexico and put together in the USA.By the way I have a met.red prodigy, hold onto it once it"s tweaked, its one of the best bass guitars there is.
