It was always my understanding that HM stood for HEAVY METAL. There was also a HM Stratocaster geared toward shredding. This bass and the HM Strat have no common design elements from the Heartfield project at all. The design phase and prototypes of these instruments preceded initial Heartfield project involvement by Fender. While the Heartfield project started up in 1988 the HM instruments came out that same year so the R&D would have finished in '87, prior to any influence of Heartfield's R&D or design.

This one with the sold black finish would be worth exactly what Bassblisters said. The crackle/flecked "EVH" influenced finishes tend to bring a little more.

USA ones are scarcer than the Japanese ones.

I think one issue Fender has in expanding out side the box is the Fender players/fan, just love the Jbass and the Pbass too much, anything different would be sacrilege. I for one would love to see different basses from Fender, other than the Jag or Mustang. But it boils down to money, and with out anyone buying it, Fender can't make it. Some of these basses were/are nice gear.

I read in a forum on Talkbass that someone was talking to a rep from Fender about their "Outside the box basses". The reason the rep gave him for Fender not making as many of them has to do with the age old dictum of capitalism "Supply and Demand". The rep said in this conversation that to some customers even the act of adding a string to a Fender is blasphemy.

The other thing is that alot of Fenders "Outside the Box" basses that didn't last long like the Jazz Plus with the Kubiki electronics and Lace sensor pick ups were essentially based on modifications that Fender Jazz players and other custom manufacturers were doing for years. I read an interview with Roger Sadowsky and he talked about why Sadowsky's are styled after Jazz Basses. The reason was that he tried a different design and when players would show up to studios with them the minute they got the bass out the engineer would look at them and say "We can't get a good sound with that." So Sadowsky started making Fender lookalikes.

Even the Marcus Miller model is just a Modified '77 Jazz Bass.

I am not Anti-Fender by any stretch of the imagination. I am currently awaiting the delivery of a Steve Bailey model. I always said that if Fender made a 6-string, 24 fret Jazz Bass I would get one. Fender finally made a bass that had the features that I wanted. But I don't think the production of it will last too long for the reasons that I just mentioned.

And I slap on the B string all the time.

I can see that...similar to what I've said :)

I've never had any issues tho Rev, in the studio, doesn't matter what bass I have (had) brought in to record with. I'm lucky I guess. I've had 5 string Fenders before, nothing blasphemy to me, it's a great product. At this time I don't need one tho.

You gotta show us pix when your Steve Bailey show up 8)

I guess Sadowsky was talking about the mid to late 70's/early 80's.

I also remember reading an interview with a session player that went to Nashville in the mid 70's and every bass player was playing a stock Fender. The same player went to LA for a while and came back. When he came back he said that all of the players were playing Fenders with heavier bridges and active electronics. The reason they cited was that they wanted a tone closer to an Alembic but engineers would refuse to work with them if they pulled out one. Now players show up to sessions with about 10 basses.

I'll definitely post with pictures of the Steve Bailey. I ordered it back in July so it should be coming any day now.

Never knew that about Sadowsky.
I've heard about the session players rebellion doing the active electronics tho. Your bass might show up later yet, paint supplier, and Fender themselves not being able to keep up with demand (supposedly per my local music store). All these online retailer and GC/SA stores gobbling up the guitars/basses from Fender. But good luck, and can't wait to see the pix!!

As requested, here's a link to a picture of my 1990 MIA Fender HM:

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/attachmen ... 1275401664

It was someone's closet classic that I found in a big used shop in the local area. I haven't purchased a new bass since 1983, but I have a Carvin B-40 Jazz kit on the way!

I had to polish the frets on the HM, as it looked as if it wasn't ever played (it still has pickguard film on it). The HM cuts through the mix like nobody's business, and the passive pickups/electronics are hot/loud.

Honestly, I worry about denting it, so I mostly play on Fender P/Js: 1986 MIJ Fender Jazz Special (Candy Apple Red) and 1998 MIM Fender Precision Special Deluxe (in Oly White).

I love the black Schaller hardware on the HM more than that of any Fender. I really dig the "T" tuners and the bridge--you can drop-in strings on this top-loader. I had similar hardware (in gold) on a 1986 Fender Precision Lyte Deluxe that I no longer have.

The HM has it's own sound, thanks to a basswood body and the interesting pickup configuration. I really dig the P/J sound, skinny Jazz necks (like the HM), and Precision bodies in a lightweight bas. Over the past 3 weeks I've enjoyed insane luck in finding both a 1986 MIJ Fender Jazz Special (Candy Apple Red) and a 1998 MIM Fender Precision Special Deluxe (Oly White; the passive model). I think the MIM will become my main player, as someone put Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pickups in it, and it rocks (and is less collectible than are the others).

Cheers to my Fender-lovin' buddies!

Yes, the HM stands for Heavy Metal, , Schaler tuners, etc. Mine has 3 emg style actives with 2 9 volt electronics, a bunch of weird switches and a stack nob arrangement. Slap on the B, use 165 gauge or tune to c#. Brutal!
