The Fender Mustang G&G hardshell case is $220. And, it really doesn't hold the Mustang inn place as well as the Gator GTSA-GTRBASS (TSA) hard shell case I'm using. It looks almost the same as the Fender hardshell on the outside. $165. Is a lot, but it's better than $220. This is the only bass i'm down too, so it gets some serious protection.

Yeah, I couldn't certainly justify spending more on a case, than I did for the bass I'd put in it, which is a typical issue when you go cheap in the instrument department. :P At least your bass costs more, so it wouldn't be as ridiculous.

The Jazz pup on the Mustang PJ, really needs the treble tone turned up for its volume. With it at a lower volume, and the bass tone up, for me it sounds fine with the treble low, and in the background. Some thing I really didn't do the first time around with this bass. The pup switch is almost always on either the top position for the Precision pup, or in the middle position for both, with the treble at an extremely low setting. Bass tone way up.

I take it you don't utilize the Jazz pickup on it as much, then?

I use the Jazz pup more as a blend for the Precision pup. On this Mustang PJ, with the Nylons, I like the sounds from it. With other types of strings, it may sound different. Flats would sound somewhat the same, at least with the ETB92S Nylons.

I used to do the same when I was playing the Fender Precision Lyte Bass, but I pretty much run both pickups full with the Ibanez bass. I imagine the flats and nylons are pretty similar in tone, although with the nylons, you're supposed to get more of an upright bass sound with those, which I imagine even more so with a hollow body, like the violin basses.

The upright bass, and D'Addario states the Nylons putout a Flats tone as well.

I suppose it is like a flatwound by it's design. What does that material on it even feel like, in comparison to a flat?

It's a hard, HIGH polished Nylon, round string. It may be a Nylon composite material for all I know. I can state, they last for a long time, keeping their tone, don't corrode, do sound like a flat string, and are able to do a stand up bass tone as well. I think Nylons are a very versatile type of string, well worth stringing on any bass. The Mustang PJ does extra fine with ETB92S Nylons onboard. ImageImage

I would eventually like to try a set for the violin bass. I'm still thinking about going to rounds for the Ibanez Talman bass, but I won't throw out the flats that I have on it, in case I want to switch back.

Yeah, it's probably a good idea to hold on them, at least for a while, unless they are totally trashed. You never know if you might need them again. I haven't done this in many years, but I have broken bass strings before. I think that might have been due to overzealous youth and inexperience hitting them hard when I played. :P

I just checked what few strings I have, and they're all long scale. I'm ok for now with the strings on the Mustang.

Out of curiosity, is there a way you can adapt long scale strings to a short scale bass, or is there too much there to do with anything with? I suppose you couldn't really cut them short enough to properly fit on the bass without screwing up the string, could you? You'd have to cut past to where you usually have the silk end, and the thinner wire, I'm sure. I usually take that end and insert it inside the space of the tuner before I wrap the rest around it, although I've seen others string up the bass (or guitar) without doing that, and the strings just hanging off of there. Usually, pictures of people back in the 60's you'd see that a lot. I was just wondering, if you've ever had to rig something like that because of an emergency, maybe back in the roadie days, because there wasn't any short scale strings available at that moment.

You can use long on a short, just cut the length. The silk will be gone, but that's something more recent, that wasn't always around to wrap around the tuning peg. There is less room on most pegs when stringing that way, so you don't get as many wrap arounds on the peg. 1 1/2 To 2 wraps is enough for most basses anyway.

OK, so you could do that if you had to. I was curious, not that I'm planning on having to do that, but at least you can and it would work.

As far as I could see, depending in the size of the strings, and the pegs. Mainly the E string.
