That's the ones. I thought those were interesting, at the time. I wonder why they discontinued them?

I had a couple of those, a Precision, and a Jazz. They were kinda' an oddity so to speak. The way the Am. Spl. Series was. It was almost like they didn't fit. Both didn't come with a case, I think they both had the upgraded adjustment rods. Rumors were rampant for both, of what parts were actually MIA. Both were suspected of MIM parts mixed in. They both were a higher price over the MIM Standard Series, and a lower price of the Am. Std. at the times. The Highway One Series had the Grease Bucket electronics in it. I honestly don't remember if the Am. Spl. had it or not.

Wasn't the American Special sort of a continuation of the Highway One series? I remember that that was still the time frame when the MIM models weren't jacked up in price like they are now. What didn't you like about the ones you had?

The Am. Spl. too me, just seemed like it was pretty close in price to the Am. Std.'s, and for close too that price, the Am. Std. had a case, better color combinations, board choices to go with the body colors.

Considering what they case for a case on it's own, plus the available color options, I can see your point with that.

In concept, it was a good idea. A higher cost above the Standard MIM's., but almost too close to the Am. Std. I myself, couldn't justify the cost of the Am. Spl. being as close to the Am. Std. that pretty much was a superior series to acquire.

After having a go with the SG Std., I do like the Mustang PJ over the SG Std. It plays, and just feels more comfortable. I guess the 9.5" radius being the same as my Jazzes is a real advantage for the Mustang as well. A heck of a lot less money for a short scale bass I prefer too.

The American Special basses also featured that greasebucket circuitry.

Well, you tried out different ones and found what works best for you. At least you're able to move the stuff you do get, and not get stuck with it.

Yes, you're right. I couldn't remember if it did, or not. One of those things that people either liked, or didn't like.

I try to believe it or not, be care of what I do acquire. i've burned in the past on a couple items that I let my guard down on. Live, and learn on those that got me. bottom line, I do really like this Mustang. A keeper.

With the Mustang being as different as it is from the two Jazzes, it actually works in well. It's great!

Yeah, it really is. Other than being a short scale, it sounds a lot like your PJ as well.

I wonder if it even has the same pickups in it? I do believe the Squier has Fender pickups in it. I should look that up and see what's under the hood.
