I don't remember those from back then myself.

I think it was more popular in the UK, which is where it was made, as well.

You don't mean Selmer Amps by any chance?

I was talking about the Marshall VBA400 head. They had those out when they had the MB amps, maybe even a little earlier than that. It was one of these: Image

Yeah, but they never went over as well as it would have been thought to do.

I think there were a few bassists in bands from the UK that used them. I don't know how many stores in the US even stocked them. I think Musician's Friend did, which probably means Guitar Center and all of that, since Guitar Center owns that.

They may not have stocked them in the stores. Or if they did, it was probably at select stores. That's how GC handles Rickenbacker's, and Mesa Amps.

It seems that Guitar Center is probably more interested in moving cheaper gear, or maybe that was sells the most. Instruments under $1000, with the exception of Fenders and Gibsons, etc. I could be wrong about that, though. They're not exactly a boutique store.

GC's smaller stores carry less of the bigger gear. They will order gear they don't stock of course. But that doesn't help if you want some hands on with the gear.

True, and you could just order from anywhere, by sitting in your house in your skivvies, if you feel like it. :P

Been there, done that. Some times it is nice to do the hands on thing though.

That's true. It does give you a chance to play on stuff that you'd normally don't, even if you don't have any intention, or are unable to buy it. I did that with the Warwick Jack Bruce Signature fretless bass many moons. It was $3800 in 1994, so yeah, that wasn't going to happen, unless I won the lottery or something. :P Speaking of Jack Bruce, I've been listening to his solo music, after going through the Cream catalog, and I have to say I really like his stuff. I never heard it before, and I'm glad I was able to have access to it. To be honest, I actually like it a lot more than the Cream stuff. I like the way his bass sounds on the recordings, and his playing more. I've also been trying find out what amps he used in the 70's. I doubt he was still using the Marshall stacks, since it didn't sound like that on the live recordings. Hartke amps didn't really come out until at least the early 90's, so he had to be using something else.

Jack had some background playing through Sunn Amps, and Selmer. Not just amps though, he had a variation of basses that had different tones. Gibsons, Danelectro, Fender, and one time I saw him play a Coral.

Well, on the "Old Grey Whistle Test" concert from 1975, I couldn't really make out what the hell he was playing through, since it was kind of dark on that part of the stage, but there was one cab that was stacked on top of another that kind of looked like an Acoustic, but it had a silver piece going across the speaker grill instead of the blue ones that Acoustic had.

There were also cabs that looked like the same shape as Marshalls, which Mick Taylor clearly had for his guitar rig, besides a small looking Ampeg cab (the Rolling Stones did use Ampegs for everything at one point, so maybe that was leftover from that,) but the ones on Jack's side (he was on the left of the drums, and the guitar was the right, with keyboardists on each side on the end of that,) I didn't see any logos. In fact, those cabs looked darker than the Marshalls.

I couldn't see any sort of amp, so it must have been on the side of the cabs somewhere, and not on top of them. His bass tone wasn't really distorted, so I don't think he was still playing through those old Marshall amps like in Cream. I did post the video in the "What Are You Watching" thread, if you feel like watching it, and maybe you might recognize something there that was used.

The one thing you can see is the bass he's playing, which looked kind of like a Gibson, but it wasn't. It had some sort of block lettering logo in a straight line on the headstock, but I couldn't make it out.

The amps I couldn't see, but the bass looks a lot like a Mosrite, a Mosrite spinoff, or a Yamaha. Sears Silvertone had a bass that looked a like that bass also. Warwick maybe.
