Hi all,

First post here so sorry if I'm putting it in the wrong place. I'm a drummer who wants to get into bass to improve my overall musicality and my interplay with bass players. I was looking at picking up either a second hand modern player jazz or a new Fender Mustang PJ. The second hand MP deal comes with a case and fender rumble 30Watt amp for €600 whereas the new Mustang and Rumble 25 would cost approx €720 without a case.

Any thoughts?

p.s. I'm into all kinds of music but mostly alternative indie - interpol, rem, the national, sufjan stevens, etc.

Well, the Mustang has a short scale, which means it has a smaller neck, which would probably make learning a little easier, although a Jazz has a pretty thin neck, which you wouldn't have to stretch your hands out as much with playing. Of course, the longer you play, the more dexterity you develop, anyway. That really would be the only advantage of the Mustang, other than any tonal preferences between the two basses, which there are some. I suppose, if it were up to me, I'd probably go with the Jazz bass, simply because I think it's a better deal, because of the included case, for the most part.

The new Mustang PJ is a killer bass. Made in Ensenada, Mexico vs Made in Communist China for the Modern Player. As for an amp it would really be worth your while to move up to a new Rumble 40.
