I have what I assume to be a rare Sting bass ... One question before I begin ... The serial number is P084399 . This suggests that it was made in 1993-94 in Japan by Fuji-Gen which makes great quality instruments . Would I be correct in assuming that Fender actually produced these Japanese Tele basses or P basses back in the early 90s and then when Sting signed on with Fender they took all these instruments that had already been produced and merely added Stings name on the 12 fret ? It would have been easily done .
I also have a 70 Tele bass that is exactly like the early 50s P basses ...Looks the same, feels the same.four bolt on maple neck and one gray bottom pickup ...
Back to the Sting bass . I have not seen another like it .It has two what appear to be gray bottom pickups .One at the neck position and the other standard mid position ... It is wired where the volume and tone controls effect both pickups simul;taniously ...
I have pictures ...This looks like it came this way from the factory ... Anybody else have one of these ? and please help me date this bass ... I know they didnt start using Stings name before 2000-2001 if I am correct .If so why the 93-94 serial number unless it was already made back then, which I hope it was.The quality is EASILY as good as a USA made Fender bass of any ilk ... The Fender Japanese guitars and basses in my opinion and I am a professional session player ,are quality wise right up there with the USA made instruments ...
The craftmanship on this bass is extraordinary ... The neck is to die for, just like my 1970 neck ...
Thanks
All the best to the rest
Jake

I also have a Sting P Bass, and I love the tone I get from it. Serial #PO92882. Not sure about the year is was made , but I bought it in 2000, I think. It's sunburst color, crafted in Japan. Sounds great through my Ampeg.
