i'm in the process of basically gutting and beefing up as much as possible my standard p bass special. i'm lookin to replace the tuners, pickups, and the bridge for starters.

i've already purchased a used leo quan bada$$ II bridge, though i did just read a review that indicated that this was basically a possibly catastrophic move, due to the need for cutting in the saddle. any feedback on that would be much helpful.

i've been hunting ebay for tuners, because there seems to be a massive price difference between not only brands but ebay prices are much better than online shops. the only names i'm familiar with are schaller, sperzel, and grover. for completely vain reasons, i'm looking for gold plated tuners. other names that have shown up that i don't know much about are gotoh and wilkinson.

i'm kind of lost on pickups, even as to what i want to get. seymour duncan's the only aftermarket name i know due to its reputation. my favorite pickups i've come across are found on g&l l-2000 and ASAT bass models, the double active humbuckers. however, i'm aware that the body and pickguard of my bass would need severe renovation to install those kinds of pickups. i'm open to suggestions that would at least give me somewhat similar tone and versatility.

i'm new to this, so go ahead and assume i know basically nothing, because that's not too far from the truth. i've worked my bass over, and had it apart several times, so i'm familiar with its current workings, but i have no idea about modern bass technology.

any suggestions would be great, from product and brand recommendation, to tips on methods i should use when installing things.

Stokes, the only advice I have is more of a suggestion, you don't have to get the saddles cut if you use flat wounds. I've not have any issues on the BadAss II that I have on my VM with flats. The BadAss III I have came pre slotted. All else is a matter of your choice in what you want - tuning pegs, pups, etc. Good luck man! :)

thanks dude. another thing i noticed lookin at pegs online is that they're several sets that say they are specifically designed for fender basses years 1976-1981. does that mean they won't work on my bass? i think mine is circa 2003, ie, a modern mexican made p bass special. i don't have my bass with me right now(i'm travelling) so i can't see if there are structural differences between the pegs on ebay and the ones currently on my bass.

for the pickups, as ignorant as this may sound, how difficult of a process is the switch from passive to active pickups?

Not sure about peg size.

As far as Pickups, all active pups are the same as passive, they're just powered, look at the Fender with actives, preamped and powered. Same pups IIRC from people talking about it. I have EMGs on my '87, I like mine, but EMG is designed to cater to the heavy/metal/hardcore sound. Good luck man.
