So I just picked up a Squire p bass made in 2004
It says standard on the headstock
I was wondering if there are differences
Between this and a vintage Modified version?

Squier Standards are some of the best Squier basses ever made. They were the most expensive Squier basses of the day and thus fewer were sold making them scarcer today. Most, if not all of them, were made in Korea by Cort which was also making some mighty fine instruments for Ibanez and other big names at the time.

The Squier Standard basses have better wood, hardware, electronics, fit and finish than other Squier model basses of the same era. They should have called them DELUXE or anything but Standard. They give today's MIM Fender Standards a run for the money.

A true Squier Standard will have the Standard script on the front peghead of the headstock. Often people try to sell other Squier series basses at a premium by saying it is "standard" but without that script decal it is NOT a Squier Standard. They are worth seeking out if in the market for a Squier bass. Definitely a totally reliable gig worthy bass and I am sure you will keep it. Excellent examples frequently sell in the $300 ballpark which is about what they cost back then. I know of no other Squier bass ever that has held value like that other than the Japanese ones. I would prefer a Squier Standard P Bass to a Vintage Modified Squier personally just because they are way scarcer. Congrats on finding it.

I had one of these. I bought it for next to nothing and basically doubled my money in a week.

I loved it and regret selling it as it was a fantastic bass. I have only owned a few Squier basses however my Vintage Modifier 70s Jazz Bass was simply a better bass. Sadly, I don’t own this one either.

So the moral of the story I guess is Squier makes amazing basses especially for the money!

Yeah, they have some decent models. I still have a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, and used to have a Vintage Modified Precision PJ Bass, but I sold it to get an Ibanez Talman bass. The only problem I had was I had to file down fret end spurs, because of the dry and cold winters I get here, which have a tendency to shrink the rosewood fretboards on those. I also replaced the bridge on the Jazz with a Leo Quan Bad $@! II bridge, but that was because I had it originally for another bass, and I wanted to try it out on that one, instead.
