I'm a short scale enthusiast whose never been able to try the Fender Rascal because there are none in stores near me. So I wonder if there are any Rascal owners out there who can report on the bass? Is the sound good? Is the action good? How does it stand up in a dense mix? Like any other passive bass? Thanks for your help...

Hi,

I love short scale basses.
Like you I couldn't find a rascal locally. I ordered it from Musician's Friend as they have an excellent return policy.

I have to say I didn' t like it. For the record I love Squire Jaguar short scale basses, so I thought this would be like a Cadillac squire jaguar.

This is just my opinion:
Quality: Excellent, checked specs right out of the box and it was good.
Color: Meh.... my wife said she didn't see me playing a teal guitar
Neck: Way to thick for a short scale. It was bigger than i expected which sucks cause if you have small hands and want a small scale bass, you would expect a smaller neck
Sound: Different. That's all I can say. It's not a jazz bass. It's got tones and tones of sound combintations, but the the lipstick pickups are not for me. I'm just stuck on that Fender Jazz sound and this is not it. You can get close if you fool around with the differnt settings, but I didn't like it.

Is it bad? Well, what is bad, right? Overall, i thought too pricey for what you are getting.

Here is my advice: Buy a squire jaguar, for less than the cost of the rascal, you can upgrade to jazz pickups and a good bridge ( and tuners if you like) and have a nice short scale bass.

Ps (if you hate the 'squire' logo, you can remove the tuners, take a random orbital sander with fine grit sandpaper and take it off. Spray with clear lacquer and you have a custom bass!

I play in a band and my short scale sounded like my American Fender jazz that I sold it. People say it sounds full and great.

Send me a message if you have any questions.

Jay

By the way, I returned the Rascal for only about $10 bucks. Musicians friend really has a good return policy.

Hey jayR. Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Really appreciate it. Happily, it appears that Fender is about to bring the Mustang back -- new P/J Mustang was announced at NAMM. Not actually available yet, though...
