That's pretty cool. 8) Didn't you also change out the pickup, or is it stock?

Yes the pup was changed as well. I removed the original 6 pole strat one and installed a Seymour Duncan 1/4 lb 4 pole pup. Nice tone with that combined with the string through body bridge.

I did keep all of the orig parts but not sure why. Out of all my guitars I'll be buried with this one before ever selling it. Just seemed like a good idea.

I remember a friend of mine having one of those basses and we noticed it had a guitar pickup in it, too. It was actually from a Strat? I thought that was odd, but I guess they were cutting corners and using what they had around.

I can only assume it was from a strat based on the design. But I remember reading that the Musicmaster basses were made to be economy or entry level guitars. They used cast off Mustang bodies and a cheaper bridge to make them.

But that bass is special to me based on how and where I got it so all the effort was worth it.

You think you'll ever get another one?

I wouldn't rule it out, if I came across some deal that I couldn't pass up. GAS is a strong thing right?

Right now my Fender Musicmaster is my main workhorse in he rock band. And the backup is a '97 Squier Musicmaster so I'm pretty well set for musicmasters. The Squier had a Vista Tone 4 magnet pickup and a string though body bridge from the factory so the upgrades to my Fender made them more even in tone, easier to switch out on the fly if needed. And I got the Squier for $100 off of Craigslist so couldn't pass that up.

For our stripped down, more acoustic based group I have a short scale Hofner ignition bass that's also pretty cool.

Yeah, you have a pretty good set up going, from what I've seen in your pics. I'd love to get a like a Hofner type bass, especially because of that hollowbody tone (I've wanted a hollowbody bass since I started playing at 16, but it never worked out to where I could get one,) and the weight, which is almost nothing really. Actually, most short scale basses would cut down on weight, too. My main bass, a Schecter Diamond Series J Bass, weighs something like 9 pounds and 10, which really starts to get to my back if I play over an hour. It's an awesome playing bass with a deep, rich tone, which I'm sure the weight contributes too, but it does start to bug me after a time like that. I'm thinking about using lighter alternatives to swap out for different songs to give myself a break, but I do need to get a couple of basses repaired first. I have a Squier Jazz Bass that's in good playing shape after I had to file down fret ends and I put a Leo Quan Bad $@! II bridge on it, but I've noticed the stock pickups aren't as loud through my amp like the other basses. They sound pretty good, but not as much output, it seems in comparison. I suppose I could just turn up the volume, though.

The Hofner is a lightweight indeed. The funny thing is that it weighs so little it almost seems "fragile" if that makes sense. But after having it about a year it's been really reliable and fun to play.

3 basses and all of them are as good as they can be, to me anyway.

That's interesting that you said something about the Hofner seeming to feel "fragile" because of it's light weight. I though the same thing the one time I played on a Jay Turser copy. It was so light and that neck was fast as hell because of the neck, plus it actually was set up nice, too. I could slide from head stock to the high frets like nothing. It actually took me a few minute of playing it to be comfortable with it to dig in because I was afraid I might break it or something. :P The story about that bass, is there use to be a tiny shop down the road where I live and they had it displayed in a window, so every time I'd go down that road I'd see it there. Of course, eventually I had to go into there to check it out. It looked too interesting to me not too. I didn't buy it, because I didn't have the funds at the time, but if I did, I would have. It was a nice bass. Of course, someone did snatch it up not long afterwards. That's how that usually goes, but at least I got to play a violin bass, which I hadn't have done previously. Who knows what the future holds? :P

Meanwhile, back on topic -- I see that Fender has removed all mention of Mustang basses from its Web site (except the Fender Mustang bass case), suggesting that there will be no new Mustang basses from Fender before Christmas. As noted earlier in this thread, Fender announced a new Fender Mustang bass (and showed a white one with a PJ pickup configuration) earlier this year. Were they announcing it for 2019, or 2023, or?

Letting the Mustang lapse from production for over a year is akin to letting the Precision lapse for a year. Does anyone know what's the real story here? This strikes me as corporate incompetence of a high order. WTHATPT?

Yes, back on topic, it seems that Fender holds the Mustang in no higher regard than many players do. It's a shame. Great basses.

I suppose it depends on what instrument that makes the most profit for them. As for waiting for a new model to come out, I typically wouldn't hold my breath waiting, judging by their past history with new releases. :P Then again, they might surprise you.

I was advised that they would release some time in October. But who knows.

I saw this post and thought I posted in it. I was told on twitter that they would be released in the fall which starts tomorrow (I think). However, someone suggested checking foreign websites. I checked andertons in the UK and they are listed. Here is a link. https://www.andertons.co.uk/p/0144050572/electric-basses/fender-mexican-offset-mustang-bass-pj-in-sonic-blue
