Does anyone know Fender's plans for the modified, short scale Mustang? I understand that both Fender and Squier have discontinued the Mustang. I heard there was a problem with the company in China that was making Mustangs for Fender (I heard the Chinese company decided to make and market its OWN basses instead of working for Fender). Will Fender be bringing the Mustang back?

Speaking personally, I'd like to see a couple things here. I'd like to see Fender bring the budget Mustang back, and I'd also like to see Fender introduce both an American Standard Mustang, and a American Deluxe Mustang.

Fender's short scale offering is awfully weak right now. The Coronado, the Starcaster and the Bronco are it? C'mon!

There is always the new and popular Rascal bass or the Squier Jaguar short scale.
If Mustang sales were strong enough they will bring it back in one form or another. However, your best bet is to go ahead and seek out a Mustang to modify (or have modified) to your specifications. That would be a lot cheaper than going full custom luthier made.

Thanks for your comments. IMHO, "the new and popular Rascal bass or the Squier Jaguar short scale" are both entry level instruments -- short scales for people who are just starting out, who have their own reason for wanting short scale. "The new and popular Rascal bass or the Squier Jaguar short scale" are not short scales for better players who want short scale for their own reasons, such as easier playing, greater mobility, better articulation. I believe Fender should stop treating short scale like a poor relation. FIT MATTERS! The Mustang is a really fine piece of work. I think Fender should honor it -- and short scale players above entry level everywhere -- by bringing out American Standard and American Deluxe Mustangs!

You can always pick up a CBS/Fender Fullerton made Mustang.

I would love to see an Am. Std. Mustang. It would be an interesting bass for sure.Image

I agree, the Mustang is a cool bass that is a great option, with both Squier and Fender lines.

I agree with the sentiment that short scales deserve a little more respect than they seem to get.

I have a '78 Fender and '97 Squier musicmaster. I consider myself beyond entry level and those two basses have served me well for years. Both were acquired in pretty rough shape and reworked some but I love them.

I have to say that was pretty cool what you did with your basses. 8)

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems to me that if you want to buy a new solid-body short-scale bass from Fender in the year 2016 that is above entry, Indonesian-made level Bronco/Rascal/Jaguar, you've got to buy... a Gibson, like maybe an EB!

The virtues of the Gibson EB aside, this strikes me as a bizarre surrender of market segment by Fender when Fender has a KILLER, Louis Fender designed short-scale solid-body bass in its stock of designs -- namely the Mustang!

The 34 inch scale should not be a matter of RELIGIOUS BELIEF! It's a matter of HAND SIZE, for god's sake. Fender's current position -- by analogy to a shoe company -- seems to be that they'll only make their best shoes in size large, and only make three low quality shoes in any other size. This is marketing lunacy!

Louis Fender may have started with the 34 inch scale, but he evolved and grew as a designer to the 30 inch scale at the end. I believe the 30 inch scale Mustang was Louis Fender's last bass design before he sold the company to CBS. It should not be treated as a poor relation.

It should be honored with American Standard Mustang and an American Deluxe Mustang editions by Fender. I'd buy one!

Just got off a live chat, and the previous Mustang Bass was Made In Japan, and was highly regarded for quality craftsmanship. Yes they have been discontinued. Fender doesn't comment on future plans.

Still you should be able to find a new MIJ Mustang bass somewhere, and for sure one lightly used. Also player grade Mustang basses made in Fullerton, CA from the CBS/Fender era should be plentiful as they were the entry level/student basses of the time until the Music Master and Bronco basses were introduced.

So HWY9 instead of ranting maybe you should be Mustang bass hunting instead.

Oh, and it's Leo Fender and not Louis.

I do! It's a red 1989 MIJ Mustang with flat-wounds, and very sweet IMHO. But that has nothing to do with my point, which is that Fender should make an American Standard Mustang and an American Deluxe Mustang. As I said before, I'd buy one!

I just found that myself a few minutes ago and was coming here to post it. The new Mustang Bass is a P/J with a pickup selector switch. A notable disappointment is the Mustang bridge has been replaced with a stock Fender bass bridge. No word on plant origin yet, but I didn't see a Corona neck plate on the one new model they showed from the back, so that narrows it town to Ensenada or China.

I am very happy to see the Duo-Sonic is making a come back too, no matter where they make it.

Yes that olive is different, to put it nicely.
