Cool to hear, Doc. But wasn't the neck too narrow? 'Measured a nut on a Bass VI at 1 7/8 (center of E to center of E) and the EB-0 Epi at 1 5/8 and gave up on the conversion idea.

Good on you for pulling it off. Wht pickup did you use?

I did like my Stu Hamm (original model was a 30") due to the shorter scale.

I admit I'm nit-picking here, but I'm pretty sure the first versions of the Fender Stu Hamm Urge basses had a 32" scale length, just like the Kubicki Factor basses Hamm was playing in the early '90s.

The current Stu Hamm Urge II has a 34" scale.

Not at all, in fact alot of the old baritone guitars had 1 5/8 nut widths. I uesd an Epiphone humbucker pickup. If I knew how to send pictures on this thing , I'd show you.

Epiphone's Elitist EB-3 SG Bass is 30" scale, the same as a Gibson EB-3 SG Bass. Otherwise, their cheaper ($300.00) EB-3 SG Bass is 34" scale, which I opted for, more so for the bang-for-the-bucks price/playability than short versus long scale. I nearly scored a used Gibson EB-3 SG Bass about 15 years ago, via a lay-away that (due to circumstances beyond my control) I ended up having to give up on. I'd fallen in love with the EB-3 tone pallet long before I even knew about the Jack Bruce/Cream connection, otherwise, I do joke about "pretending I'm Jack Bruce, whenever I play Sunshine Of Your Love, or other Cream songs I know on bass."

I don't include my Fender VI, when considering 30" versus 34" scale, as I tend to play it more like a guitar than a bass. Aside from still wanting to add a Fender Jazz Bass to my collection (I already have a Squier Affinity and Fender Standard P), I'm wanting to add a Jaguar Bass to my collection. Scale length differences of basses don't bother me, the same as they don't bother me with electric guitars.

Matt

Ok, guys, we've travelled WAY off topic here...The point is that yes, there are some truly great @30'' scale basses out there, and Fender/Squier makes a few of them.

Oh and for the Fender rep out there (and to get back OFF topic), how about a Squier Bass VI that us poor working class folk can afford?

If your hands are geting bad, maybe try out an Ashbory bass. They take some getting used to , but can produce some very cool sounds.

If you can find one, the Precision Junior is TINY. I get ribbed about its size but no one has ever said a negative thing about its sound. The tuners are the only thing that keep it from fitting in my Strat case.

I own a variety of guitars at all different lengths.
I have long arms, so I do enjoy the longer guitars (especally my Epiphone Thunderbirds, they are amazing [Their length is around 34"]).
I normally keep my basses really low, around thigh high. This allows me to rest my "picking" hand either on the body or on one of the pickups.

John Deacon of Queen kept his bass really high. It all depends on your feel for the guitar. I like low because I have long arms and long fingers.

[quote="JSJH"]At the risk of being heretical, the Epiphone EB-3 style is really light and might even be available in a 30 1/2 inch scale.

The original EB was a short (30 1/2 inch) scale. The 34 1/2 inch version appeared later.
I've learned to play on a 30 inch shortscale semi-acoustic,
then switched to a fretless 34 inch Precision Jazz.
People with small hands (girls) often prefer a shortscale,
one advantage of a shortscale is that it allows you to play
fast, at times as fast as a guitar (this can be done on a longscale too,
but will take more effort).

There's an Epiphone EB-0 30" scale 4-string out there for under $300, plays and sounds and looks hot.

On the Fender side, the Bass VI 30 1/2 inch 6-string octave guitar from the Custom Shop is beautiful, magnificently built, toneful, versatile...

...oh, yeah, and like $3800

Actually, it's funny you should mention that Epiphone EB-0 and the Bass VI, because I converted one of those EB-0's into an EB-6 (Gibson's version pre-dated the Bass VI by about 4 years)

Hi. I know this is an old thread but maybe you can help me.

I have a question. I thinking of using an EB-0 neck to a Bass VI project but I also thought that the string spacing would be to narrow. How did you do with the two extra tuners? Do 2 additional they fit between the existing ones?
