I'm thinking about buying a new American Standard Jazz Bass. I noticed that the maple fingerboards have a gloss finish, while the rosewood ones do not. I'm wondering - what is the reason for that? Also, if anybody has insights on which they prefer and why, I'd love to hear that, too.

I've always loved the thinner Jazz necks. I recently joined a new band, and my current active bass is not a perfect match. Thinking of going American Jazz. Thanks!

White necks have a thick glossy polyurethane for protection of the fretting/playing surface since it doesn't have an actual fretboard. White maple turns a filthy black very quickly if left unprotected.

Necks with a rosewood fretboard have a satin finish on the maple, and the rosewood is oiled/waxed/polished smooth.

I have both types and much prefer the thinner satin finish. I find that it's faster, but I keep both clean and well polished. So any difference is a very subtle one.

The biggest difference is in tone with white necks being brighter. Rosewood being warmer and easier to play. Just buy the one you like best.

Addendum: I just did a quick check on the specs, and the white necks do indeed now have a satin finish on the backs and gloss on the playing surface. So there you go, no difference on the backside.

Okay, so the gloss on the maple fingerboard is to keep it cleaner. For rosewood, it's not necessary due to the darker color.

Yeah, I'm glad they don't put gloss on the back of the necks. I don't like the feel of a glossy back of neck. Especially outdoors in heat and humidity.

Is the satin on the back nice to play? Does it stay fairly constant, or does it polish some with time?

Thanks!

I keep my hands clean and also keep the neck backs clean and well polished to keep them slick and fast. I use MusicNomad Guitar One. A dirty and sticky neck is an abomination unto the Lord.
