I have an overall great sounding Jazz American Standard deluxe (bought 5/15) - if only the open E was not so weak, thin and raelly going down in volume compared to the rest of the E -string. I tried everything that techs told me to do: raised and lowered the pickups (N3 noiseless), raised and lowered the strings, controlled the nut, controlled the bridges and its screws, changed dtrings from 100 to 105s, from stainless steel to ni kel plated, used DR-, Ball- and Markley- strings, user stainless steel and nickel: to no effect. Have I forgotten something crucial? Or is it a lemon? Thanks for ideas and recommendations! Ruggero

Possibly an incorrectly-slotted nut......?

Thanks a lot, I appreciate the help. I will have it checked out. The slot might be too tied for my 105 gauge, as the E-string sits quite a bit higher then the other strings.

Agree with Arjay. An open E on any Fender bass should sound like the voice of God. Take your bass to a competent luthier to have the action set at the nut. This is a critical bit of initial set-up that is often over looked by many.

Also what amp are you playing through? Is it capable of truly reproducing the 41Hz fundamental?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm agreeing with linnin, and BMW-KTM on the amp you're running it through. No matter what strings you have on it, the open E should have a heavy metal thunder to it.

I am running the Jazz Bass through a very deep reaching AER Amp One (200 Watts) and small Ampeg Ba-112. You all are probably right with focussing on the nut (and I will have a tech looking at it immediately), and I am thankful for theses ideas. I had thought before, that such a more or less "standard from the Fender shelf mechanically reproduced part" of the bass was almost automatically correct ...

Nuts are still hand-fitted and finished -- thus the human element (with the possibility of oversight or miscalculation) is still present during a bass's assembly.
