I just bought what i think is a 1978 fender jazz bas.
but the serial number is very odd.
Instead of having S8 and then 5 digits the bass has the serial S88 49512.
should i be worried about it being a fake or did fender use a special serial for some instruments?? This is a standard US maple neck natural finish bas. looks, plays, sounds and feels like the reel thing.
Any info and referances to fender on this subject wouldbe much valued.

Kind regards
Johan

When I ran your number through http://www.guitardaterproject.org/fender.aspx
"Serial number unrecognized"

I'd email some photos to Fender Consumer Support and see what they say.

Did you buy this from a reputable store, or private sale? If the bass proves to be counterfeit will they return your money?

Are you in the USA? Where did the bass originate? The reason I ask is that EXPORT Fender made instruments use different serial formats from ones made for distribution in North America. This is done to lock export instruments out of the North American warranty. Fender's export instruments are NOT warrantied by Fender but instead are warrantied and supported by the distributor importing them. This off shore distributor support includes not only warranty responsibility (usually a very short warranty), but ALSO requires the distributor to maintain serial data for instruments they import. Fender does not maintain data on export serials, at least through the CBS era. So all online Fender resources and other online resources like Guitar Dater Project will ONLY work for instruments Fender distributed in North America.

Fender Fullerton through the CBS era so far as I know did not maintain serial records for export instruments which makes it impossible to date an export instrument by serial using almost any online resource.

If there is a chance it is an export instrument then that explains why you can not authenticate the serial. To do so you would have to backtrack to the country where the instrument came from and then contact the company who was the distributor in that country at that time and get the information from them...if they are still in business. International distributors change frequently. They come, they go.
