Hi all,

Looking for some guidance here.
I have what I believe is a 1997-2000 CIJ Jazz Bass. However, I have an inconsistency that is confusing me.
At the base of the neck, it just says 'Crafted in Japan'. The writing is not in italics but is the usual cursive looking font.
The serial number is located on the headstock and is O066xxx. On the headstock, it also says 'Made in Japan'.
If it helps, the Fender logo is black with a gold outline.
I haven't taken the neck off, but the truss rod is adjustable at the headstock.

I'm 'thinking' that I have one of those thrown together models from the factory transition that people talk about. I don't believe it to be fake, mostly because of the rectangle mother of pearl inlays which are flawless across the fret board. I've also seen one other person online describe their guitar as fitting the description above.

Any help is good help.

 Yeah, Fender Japan serials are all whacked out (that's a technical term). One of the best ways to find out exactly what you've got is to get a photo appraisal from Gruhn Guitars.

Honestly I think yours is more likely a 1994/95.

Go to the GuitarDaterProject.Org website and plug your serial in there. There was no "Factory Transition" as all Fender Japan basic Standard Precision and Jazz Basses have all been made at Fujigen Gakki in Matsumoto until 2015. Guitar production did move to Dyna and Tokai for a while during a factory expansion at Matsumoto which is the "Factory Transition" relevant to guitars but it is totally irrelevant to basses. Fujigen continued to make all the Fender Japan basic/standard export basses and all the Heartfield project basses up until very recently.

Fender Japan basses in general were never in a "Factory Transition" until 2015 with the exception of some high end artist series and low end instruments intended only for sale domestically that were contracted by Fender Japan elsewhere.

What I strongly suspect in your case is that the neck was made with the "Crafted" decal but not serialized shortly before the one-year only return of the "Made" decal on the headstock for the anniversary year deal. When it was assembled they were doing the "MADE" decal on the headstock for the anniversary year. They did that "Made" decal on the headstock after "Crafted" for one year only...and then went back to "Crafted" after the anniversary was over.

Whacked out is one way to put Fender Japan's serialization. They started reusing serial formats last year. OMG.

An "O" serial with six digits following the "O" with a "MADE" decal on the headstock is what you say you have and that computes out to a 94/95 and not a 97/2000.

The "O" serials stamped "Crafted" only with no "Made" on the headstock were made 97-2000 but these ONLY have five digits after the "O" while yours has six digits. Your instrument sounds to me without a physical inspection to almost certainly be a 94/95 model.
