A crack recently developed on the neck of my sunburst 2005 Jazz Bass. It's a small, hairline crack on the backside of the neck, starting at the truss rod fillet (skunk stripe) and curving upwards towards the logo side of the headstock. It doesn't affect the playability of the bass or even seem that severe, but just in case I took it to Bill Fels and Doug Montgomery of Guitar Factory in Orlando. Bill and Doug do amazing work and if anyone can fix it, they can.
Or so I thought.
When Bill looked at the neck he sighed a bit. That concerned me.
"Run your fingernail across the top of the skunk stripe where the crack starts."
I did as he asked and noticed something that I had not noticed when I initially discovered the crack.
"Feel that?" he asked. "The crack has caused the skunk stripe to deviate a bit. It shifted down, into the neck, by a fraction of an inch. It's not much, but enough to concern me. The crack appears to have gone down into the truss rod cavity. We can try to mend it with some cyano-acrylic resin but it's a 50/50 shot that the crack will or won't continue. If I were you, I'd find the neck a new home."
Grrrr...not what I wanted to hear. I love the feel of this neck so much. And as we all know, instruments made by the same rigorous standards on the same machine can still feel and sound different so replacing the neck concerned me. But he was right, I needed a new neck.
But 1st I needed to get the cash. I found a guy who is willing to buy my damaged neck among other Fender odds and ends I had laying around. I will be shipping the items out today.
As a result of my search for the neck for this bass, I found a couple of choices. The 1st one being a Warmoth reverse headstock with block inlays, hardware, and extended fretboard (24 frets). Beautiful and Intriguing if not unique. Not crazy about the truss rod adjustment at the heel....the kind that requires the neck to be removed. The second neck I found is a '75 re-issue,bound,block inlays, vintage style tuners, string tree, truss adjustment at the headstock, and nut. I like this one a lot although it is the 3 hole bolt on variety (my bass is the more common 4 bolt) which shouldn't prove to be a problem thanx to super glue and toothpicks! I'll have bill do the fitment and setup.

I will post more pics as this bass progresses...excited to see it's continuing journey!

Done deal...I put a deposit on it last week and will probably order 1st thing next week. My band has a gig with the David LaRue Band on JUly 1st and I really want to have it played in by then.
Love the look of the wenge..but...ahhh...that's another project

And the neck is here....
I spent the morning installing the '75 re-issue. It's a 3 bolt,micro-tilt neck so I had to drill 2 new holes for fitment. The neck sits tight and snug in the pocket and I have not had to do any adjustments to the truss or bridge as of yet. I'll let it settle a few days and re-evaluate.

That looks good with the block inlay. Have you had to do any other adjustments?

Just some minor saddle adjustments but no truss rod tweeks or neck shims. It feels tight and fast. I love this bass.
