Alrighty, this morning at a "musician's garage sale", I snagged a couple of brand new bass bridges...one of which I plan to use on the J-bass clone I recently picked up...an early to mid 70's MIJ, although not sure of the brand yet...I think it's either an Electra or a Greco, but the headstock was painted (could even be a vintage Fender for all I know at this point). The bridges have no brand/label/stamp on them, however they intrigued me as they had something I had never seen before...magnetic saddles. In other words, there's not an actual screw to adjust the intonation...the saddles are held to the bridge plate by magnetism.

Now honestly here, while I don't normally go in for gimmicks at all, I got these suckers for dirt cheap ($10 for a gold chrome and $3 for a black one) so if they turn out to be totally useless, I haven't really lost anything. That said, both bridges do have some heft to them...A LOT more mass than the bridge currently on this J-bass (the old Tele style with a plate and 2 brass saddles), so I suspect they'll still be an upgrade. My biggest concern is intonation...I would think that between the magnets and the string pressure, they should stay in place, but only time will tell there.

Anyways, again I'd never seen anything like this...magnetic saddles...has anyone seen these or used these?

Thoughts/comments/opinions?

Nope. Me neither but I will be anxiously awaiting the results of your experiments with them.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I wouldn't be to crazy about magnets in the vicinity of the magnets in a pup. Also magnets direct contact on a string.
