I haven't played much bass in quite a while, but I've had an opportunity to play my Jazz Bass a lot the past couple weeks. I'd forgotten how heavy it is, and I'm getting some neck and shoulder pain. I've seen these other kinds of straps - anybody have any ideas what works well with the weight of a bass? I don't mind being a pain in the neck, but I don't want to have one!

I've had pretty good luck with the Planet Waves Padded Comfort Strap http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-PLA-74T000-LIST on my Schecter Diamond J Bass (which isn't featherweight, either.) You have to break it in a little bit when you first wear it and get use to it's width, but after it breaks in (not too long at all,) it's great. It helps a lot. Of course, that's me and your results may very. It's like clothes or shoes in that way, I think.

Try Italia (italiastraps.com). Forum member Brother Dave turned me on to them a year ago or so. They make a 4" all leather strap that disburses the load nicely, and if you watch for sales, they run buy one get two free, sometimes better, which really brings the price in line.

I have an issue where my fingers on my left hand tingle/fall asleep. This wider strap has really helped that a lot. Eliminates the need for a strap lock, too. Once it's on, it's on.

I made the bass livable by using a Neotech strap. It is fairly wide and filled with a soft compound that distributes the weight. Only drawback is they are black only. Almost gave up on bass until I found this strap.

Those seat belt cushions they sell in the automotive section work great. Has built in velcro and they come in assorted colors. Thick padding and distributes the weight.

They do have what's called a "Slinger Sling Strap" here:

+1111! I use this one from Fender, but it is the same as the Neotech except it has 'Fender' on it in white. Love this strap on my Jazz. $25
