A little off topic, but here's a shot of my 50th Anniversary Jazz with my '73 P bass and my Dad's original '61 Jazz bass. My dad loaned it to me recently to enjoy as he's not playing it much anymore and likes the idea of it getting some positive attention. 8)

He toured the states in the 60's and played it occasionally on through the 90's, but he took really good care of it. Always wiped it down at the end of the night and keeps it in a pillow case inside his hard case. It does have a couple little dings here and there in the paint (he says from bumping into the cymbals), but no buckle rash or anything. He says he still has the mutes somewhere and possibly even his original bill of sale. 8)

Notice how dark the fingerboard on the '61 is, compared to the fingerboard of the Anniversary bass. I really like the dark wood. Anyone try oiling/staining theirs? I love the darker look, especially with the candy apple red, but I am afraid of screwing it up and losing value on the anniversary bass; though I don't plan on selling it anytime soon.

Any opinions on my above comment about darkening the rosewood fingerboard?

That is very cool that your dad owns a pristine '61 Jazz bass! Remember that the '61 jazz probably has a Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard, so it is always going to be darker than a modern Jazz bass that uses pao ferro or Indian RW for its fingerboard.wood.

You can darken a fingerboard with lemon oil or linseed oil but it may never be as dark as the wood on the '61 Jazz.

You have some very cool basses.

Thanks for your comment. I forgot about the Brazillian rosewood. Good point.

You think it would ruin the value/collectability of the bass if I did stain it a little darker? I have no plans to sell, but I still don't want to ruin anything, either.

Please do not stain the rosewood. Yes it would devalue the bass.

I appreciate your comment. As much as I like the darker shade, I just can't do it.

So I'd been wondering about the number of these that were produced. I had heard that 500 were made, but I also wondered if that was being confused with the anniversary basses from the 90's. Today I was speaking to a Fender customer service representative who was very helpful on a few matters, and I happened to ask him this question. He told me that 772 of the 2010 Anniversary Jazz basses were made. :P 8)

I had always heard 500 also, but never really checked. Since you heard 772 directly from Fender, I will put that number in the book as well. Fender's records, at least in the past, are terrible. I have never been able to absolutely pin a manufacturing quantity on any bass, and some, like my Performer collection, the closest I came was from Rob (who was in QC at the time) who says he inspected several hundred, but certainly not thousands....pretty open window there, so I usually just say under 1000.

Thanks for that input though...good stuff. When it comes to Jazz basses, that is one of my very favorites. A bit heavy for a long gig, but I love the sound and the ease of play.

Steve
