Good to hear from you brotherdave. I keep seeing "only 500 made" all over the place regarding this one, but maybe they are mixing up the Fender 50th Anniversary models from 1997?

That is entirely possible and makes perfect sense.

Congrats Ghastly. Hey, even with the shipping you didn't get hurt. Nice buy. I really enjoy the bass and I am certain you will too. Thump on.....thump on!

Thanks! 8) Plays smoothly too. I notice that it smudges easier from my hands while playing than my other basses though. Is there something different about the finish on these?

yes there is a difference in finishes...the 50th has a Nitrocellulose Lacquer Finish whereas the Clayton has a Urethane finish.

Huh. Well I hate to say it, but I think I prefer handling the urethane finish. My '73 P bass has a nitro finish though, and it doesn't seem to hold onto the smudges as much.

I want to swap out the pick guard to a white pearloid guard, but not as easy to find one with the right hole configuration! I don't mind drilling a few, but the top tugbar holes have a different layout than the type without the tugbar. And I don't want to drill any extra holes in the body. You'd think somebody would make one?

I think that it would look a lot better with a pearloid pick guard.
As much as I would like to change mine. Im just going to keep mine original

Added a pearloid pick guard. Had to drill a few extra holes on it though.

Well it is yours so you can do that. I would have left it stock. Commemorative and Artist Series instruments should not be modded in my opinion because it is now no longer what it was.

Yes, I agree totally. Poorly worded on my part.

What I meant was I had to drill the (new) pick guard. One of the screws above the pickup cover is a "dummy" screw head that I added to an existing hole on the pick guard. I wanted to make it look better without actually drilling the body, since there is no hole at that spot on the body. I won't mess with the actual instrument.

And, of course, I am keeping the original pick guard and all the case candy/hang tag stuff.

Wow, you did yourself a huge favor there. You'd be surprised how few people would go to that trouble.
