I knew a guy 35 years ago who would take a brand new set of flats and soak them in a saucepan containing melted butter mixed 50/50 with beeswax. True story. This is not a joke. We used to joke with him that his sweet tone was so buttery smooth. The truth was he just wanted to fill up all the internal voids and damp the hell out of them to reduce any sustain and convert spank into thud. Instant "old' strings filled with finger crud. Some guys go for that sound. That was his solution. Surprisingly enough, his bass didn't feel greasy. He would take great care to wipe them down really thoroughly before stringing them up. I'm sorry guys. I know that sounds like a joke and you're waiting for the punchline but that really did happen. Some of the dumb crap we did in our youth still surprises me even today ... and I was there. I saw it. Sometimes I did it. Dumb crap that is, not butter in the strings. I wasn't THAT stupid ... but I hung out with guys who were.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I've never felt compelled to do anything to my strings, other than change them when I needed to. I'll admit, I did leave a pair on for 5 years before on my bass as well as guitar, but it wasn't that important to me at the time. I've been more meticulous about such things lately, though. :P

I honestly don't understand the like for a dead, dull thud. Never have and never will. Putting butter or vegetable oil on a string will just get ransed and full of bacteria. Maybe they have a "Thud disease" LOL ;)

Imagine what they might do to get a "brown sound." :P

I always imagined the Allman Brothers had their guitar strings chicken fried to get that tone. :P
