You know that's right.

Roto flats are usually $32-$35 a set, depending on where you buy them, so that can add up quick. I wonder why flats cost more than round wounds, anyway?

I believe they cost more to manufacture than rounds do.

They are a bit more expensive to make, but the big deal is that they will last a good 10 years or more of constant play. So the string manufacturers want a bit more of your money to make up for lost sales of rounds.

Here's a long thread on the new Ernie Ball Cobalt Flat Slinkys. As is usual some love them and others hate them. I find them intriguing and may try a set on my Jazz.

You know, I've been thinking about trying out a set of those. I use Ernie Ball Slinkys on my Tele and other guitars, so I do like the brand.

I have recently purchased an American Standard Jazz bass that came already fitted with Fenders own Super Bass 8250M Taperwound strings which I did like the sound of but I thought that I could stand out in the mix better with a more expensive set of strings. I did not record with the stock strings and took them off and tried a set of new Elixir Nanowebs and a set of new D'Addario Flatwound Chromes. Both of them sounded good but were lacking slightly when cutting through the mix. I then tried recording with the stock Fender 8250M Taperwounds and found a huge difference with the Fenders cutting through the mix a great deal more than the Elixirs and D'Addarios. I could not get my head around this as I thought the none Fender strings would be vastly superior based on recommendations and price. I was wrong and from now on I will use Fenders 8520M Taperwounds and save some dosh at the same time.

Hello gentlemen

I bought recently a 2010 but in a “as new” condition Jazz Am Std, and this baby came with a set of flats with red fabric a the top (see picture).
Unlike D'Addario's, the little balls at the end (bridge) are golden (not one color by string).

Image

Before that, I was convinced than my hunt for the perfect string was over one for good. For years I use Fender 9050L flats and I love them.

But these “red fabric” strings are quite good, brighter than the Fender and nicely finding their way in my bands mix.

The problem is that the seller of the bass doesn't remember the brand of the strings (installed by a shop long time ago and so on..). So if any one as an idea….

Another point, once I got the brand, is there a way to know for sure the gauge ?

Thanks for your inputs

Luc

Luc, I'll bet they are Rotosound 77's as they come with red silks.

When I look back at the price of strings then and now ... I see that very little has changed.
Back in the early 80's when I was playing bass way more often than guitar a set of bass strings was around $30 - $35. Nowadays a set of bass strings is around $30 - $35. That's in Canuck-bucks of course and for round wound strings, not flats. The difference is that back then I was lucky to make $20K per year. Now, $20K doesn't even pay the tax-man come year end. Strings are actually much cheaper now if you ask me.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I think so, too. I use those and I don't remember any other brand at the moment that had flats with the red silk on them.

Thomastik-Infeld JF344 Jazz Flats have red silks too. Might have to measure the string gauges.

Yeah if the strings are low tension and feel floppy with a pronounced midrange and diminished lows, then they are most likely T-I's. They have pure nickel flat ribbon wrap which has a very distinctive tone that I like. It's also very soft and goes wonky on you at about five years or so. At least my set did.

Rotosound 77's are very much more robust and noticeably higher in tension.

I went to a lighter gauge with my Rotosound flats. I found the heavier gauge a little too stiff, especially on my Squier Jazz Bass. As soon as I switched it over and lower the action a bit, it smoothed things out considerably.

Freshly grated, not that smelly powdery stuff that comes in a jar. ;)

Why not just coat them with plain yogurt and let them grow mold? :)
