The more I play my new AVRI '64 Jazz, the more I love it. Such a lovely, crunchy tone. And it really cuts through a mix, too. Curiously, while it came strung with round wounds, the goodies included a new set of flats. I also have a set of flats that I bought for my former MIM fretless.
So, when the time comes.... Flats or Rounds? All opinions welcome.

Your Jazz came stock with Fender 7250M .45-.105 Nickel Plated Steel roundwounds. If you like that tone just buy more of them. Fender's bass strings are wound by D'Addario to Fender's specs, so they are not simply repackaged D'Addario XL's (which are very good strings too). My American Standard Jazz came stock with Fender 8250's NPS with a .110 taperwound E string that I liked. I am currently using D'Addario EXL-170BT (Balanced Tension) that I like very much, just wish it had Fender's .110 taperwound E. That's one of the very best sounding E-strings out there at any price.

Agreed. I much prefer the clarity and note definition of taper-wound strings. I have recently switched to a model of Rotosounds which are all taper-wound and I love them. They're pricy and they're also a little strange to string up since you get to choose how much bare core-wire extends beyond the fulcrum of the saddle. I use the factory suggested ¼" and it seems to work quite well. These are definitely the spankiest bass strings I've tried.

I agree with "linnin," if you like the sound, just keep a fresh set on the bass. On the other hand if venture into the flat-wound territory, there is complete different tone is relation to how it is articulated. Round-wound strings cover quite a bit sonic real-estate due to the overtones inherit with the round-wounds design. Although in the mix much of this brilliance gets buried, it still has that cutting edge.

Flat-wounds have a clearly defined place withing the sonic landscape due to it's limited range. Its emphasis is with the thick low mid-range that naturally doesn't have the extended treble bite. Except for some keyboards, in the modern electric setting there isn't anything that competes for space in the natural range of a flat-wound strung Fender bass. NOTE: flat-wounds work particularly well with the P-bass.

Bearing the hands and there isn't any extreme compensation via equalization, round-wounds tend to have the bite, the flat-wounds tend to have the punch.

See if your local dealer has a display bass ( any brand ) with " GHS M3050 Precision Flats " installed to test... you may like the feel and deep rich sound that you get. All 7 of my basses are so equipped... no rounds for me any longer.

That's a good analysis, I like that.
Flats punch like a heavyweight boxer in full on attack mode.
Rounds also have attack, but they growl and snarl: bite & bark; snap & spank, zing & twang. Being so aggressive, they die quickly yet valiantly. They also eat your fingers, and your frets, and your wallet.
I have to have both, and so I do. GHS Precision Flats on my '76 Precision and D'Addario EXL-170BT's on my American Standard Jazz.

I find my sound improves if I do not use strings and just turn up the bass in iTunes.

I like mine with meatballs, tomato sauce and Parmesan.
Freshly grated, not that smelly powdery stuff that comes in a jar. ;)

I think strings are highly overrated. It's best just to pose with your instrument on Face ache, I mean Facebook and play nothing at all. Just talk about it instead. Why bother playing it? :P
