Hi.
I have a few quick questions about the Fender Modern Player 2013 Jazz Bass.
The first one is about the rotary pickup setup knob: Is it up-to-down 1 to 4 or 4 to 1 ? I only found 1 video review of the bass and it was really shady.
4-Position Rotary:
1. Midde/Bridge Pickups
2. Middle Pickup/Outer Coil Bridge Pickup
3. Bridge Pickup/Outer Coil Middle Pickup
4. Outer Coil of Middle/Outer Coil of Bridge Pickup
Second, is it okay to change the tuning pegs on those bases and where can I look for good quality ones ? I know I sound like an idiot asking this but I really think it would look killer with black ones.
Third, how are these bases performing with steel strings and non-nickel ? Do they "rub off" too much the board ?
Lastly, are pickguards made for this model separately ?

I have one of these basses. A nice instrument for the price. I modified a few things just for fun. I wish I could answer your questions about the knob positions, but I'm not quite clear what you're asking, exactly. Regarding the pick guard, as you can see, I changed mine to an awsome tortoise. I have yet to see any guards offered for this model with the humbuckers, so I just customized a standard pick guard with my dremel. Worked beautifully. I wish the headstock matched the body.

P.S. I did have to swap out the bridge to fit the cover on. I just used the old 'classic' Jazz Bass bridge.

I believe the loudest setting on the rotary switch is both pickups humbucking. I haven't really felt the need to use any other position (full clockwise). As for the pick guard, I've replaced mine too. I got one from WD and it fit almost perfectly with only a slight adjustment needed at the interface with the switch plate. Only concern with the base, it is heavy but not unbearable. They do seem to have suddenly gotten rare or discontinued. Noticed a lot of parts on ebay and haven't seen them advertised by the big stores recently. GC just dumped a few for a nice discount.

Great mod and what a cheeky little job on the pick guard. WAY TO
GO! How about any sonic changes using the traditional jazz bridge and pup covers. Surely there are noticable changes in tone!??
I have one modern player MM type humbucker thats looking for a home (had it a long time) Your bass and the work has inspired me. Thanks. That's a great piece of lateral thinking that delivered great style for you. 100%

Thanks. I apreciate your comments.

I figured modding a lower end instrument like this geared towards a classic style did no harm. It's been a while since I've played it, but at the time I really didn't notice much tonal differences.
