Hi. I'm experiencing a strange problem, that's only occurred in the last couple of days, with my MM Jazz.

The active circuit now has a slightly (but significantly) lower output than the passive. I have replaced the 9v battery with a new one and it makes no difference.

I can't work it out, as all other factors are the same (cables, amp etc.). I've tried a couple of different cables too).

The active circuit was always the higher output one, as you probably know anyway, even if the bass setting was turned down to match the passive.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

This may sound strange, but did you buy a new battery or did you use a battery that you had laying around?

If for sure the battery is good, then this isn't the sort of thing that can be sorted out in an online forum environment. Performance issues on an active bass circuit are not only next to impossible to remotely diagnose but also risky for do-it-yourselfers to repair.

It could be something as simple as a bad connection or it could be the preamp. If this is under warranty you should get it to an authorized service center for diagnosis before voiding the warranty by poking around yourself.

If not under warranty (such as you bought it used) you'll still want an experienced tech to deal with this, but it will be at your own expense. Could be a bad switch, loose wire/cold solder joint or bad preamp. If there is no change in passive mode function then it isn't the pickups or the jack or the volume pot. Everything in the power, preamp, tone and passive/active switching and wiring becomes suspect including the functionality of the preamp. 9 times out of 10 issues like this turn out to be something simple however if it is under warranty I'd let the service people find and fix it. If not under warranty you'll still likely require a qualified tech to straighten this out. Preamps generally either work or don't...but the preamp could be faulty or it could just be a bad connection on the preamp board that needs a light touch-up. Impossible to say. But it does need someone who knows what they are doing!

Cool, thanks for the input. Yes, it was a brand new battery, BTW.

Guess I'll take it to a tech and see what they say.

Thanks again for the help.
