Hey guys, sorry to bother you, but I could really use some opinions of veteran Fender JB players here. I'm contemplating buying a secondhand JB MIJ from 1996. I know the serial number corresponds, but I'm a little suspicious because the seller is selling it dirt cheap (about half its original retail price) Also, the sticker on the back of the headstock got me scratching my head. So my question is basically, is this a fake or a genuine Fender JB MIJ? I know you guys must be getting these kind of questions a lot, and I did find this thread: viewtopic.php?t=35431 about how to spot a fake. But I'm still very much a newbie, not just in terms of Fender basses, but when it comes to basses in general. So some help from some more experienced members would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Oh, and yes the owner swapped out the neck pup, but it comes with the original pick up as well, and a hardshell case.

That's a little light tinted to be a Fender neck finish.

Fender Japan 1975 Vintage Reissue Jazz Bass made in the 1996 model year. Very nice instrument. I'd go ahead and change BOTH pickups to a matched set. Other than the stock pickups it is a really nice and well made ash bodied Jazz Bass.

All Fenders made in the USA, Japan and Mexico in the 1996 model year got that same sticker on the back of the headstock. It isn't suspicious at all, it not being there would be suspicious since the V serial dates to 1996-1997...so it appears legit. There is nothing suspicious about the light colored neck either. It looks correct and the logo decal and serial decal are correct. These generally sell for $600 to $700 or a bit more around here for one in player class like this one. I've seen $800 asking prices but usually they'll take less. If this one is less that $600 it is a good buy so long as the neck doesn't have any functional issues and the frets are good.

It won't ever be collectible since the original solder joints have been disturbed, but frankly it is hard to find one of these where the pickups are stock. Fender Japan uses great wood, has decent hardware and excellent fit and finish...but usually weaker electronics than USA or Mexican Fenders. I'd probably also do a tone cap swap on it if it hasn't been done already. I would not bother changing the pots or jack unless they have an issue. Just the pickups and tone cap. Then it would be a super player!
