I have just grabbed a 1974 JB. My neck pickup gives a loud 'E' with a bit of a click sound compared to the rest of the strings. The pickup height looks consistent across the strings.

How do I know when the pickups are on the way out (does this mean they need rewinding?).

I love the look of my worn 74 JB and love the way it plays, but prefer the sound of my active 2005 Deluxe JB (but horrible colour). Can I replace the pickups in the 74 Jazz to something a bit more punch? I love the 'both pickups scooped eq' sound.

Thanks in advance.

No sound , coil open ( wire broken ) if you take reading with meter on ohms scale

Thanks for that. So the pickups either 'work' or 'dont work', I did't know if they kind of 'faded' or something!

Maybe the pickup is too low, but can't see a way of making it higher (unless I wedge something underneath it?)

Good pictures .
Check pickup carefully height . May be too high ?
Look a these set up here on SUPPORT.

PICKUPS BASS

Setting pickups too high can cause a number of unusual occurrences. Depress strings at last fret. Using a 6" (150 mm) ruler, measure the distance from the bottom of the first and fourth strings to top of the pole piece. A good rule of thumb is that the distance should be greatest at the fourth-string neck pickup position and closest at the first-string bridge pickup position. Follow the measurement guidelines from the chart below as starting points. The distance will vary according to the amount of magnetic pull from the pickup.

Note: Larger string gauges need wider vibrational allowances. If you have a five-string bass or are using heavier-gauge strings, your measurements must be increased accordingly.

Bass Side Treble Side
Vintage style 8/64" (3.6 mm) 6/64" (2.4 mm)
Noiseless™ Series 8/64" (3.6 mm) 6/64" (2.4 mm)
Standard "J" or "P" 7/64" (2.8 mm) 5/64" (2 mm)
Special Design Humbuckers 7/64" (2.8 mm) 5/64" (2 mm)

It could also be a dead string.
