Hi,

The bass can be active or passive.

There are some threads about the preamp on this forum or talkbass.com.

I will search and let you known.

The Fender Marcus Miller preamp was modeled after the original Sadowsky preamp Marcus has in his own '77 Jazz Bass.

Thanks! I've never heard the MM preamp in a bass. It may sound great for MM but in a Squier V-- I'm not sure. I prob won't mess with a Squier this time- I already have 2- Rat Rod Squier and Jaguar special active- both pretty good basses BUT they aren't USA's. I appreciate the help but in the mean time I've decided not to do the move.

I my opinion, the preamp in the MM Jazz is the weakest part of that bass. I can tell you from owning a number of Sadowsky basses as well as a Sadowsky preamp box that I use with my '72 Jazz, the MM preamp sounds nothing like the Sadowsky preamp.

Number of years ago I had a Fender American Deluxe FMT Jazz, took out the stock preamp and replaced it with a Sadowsky preamp. Man oh man! It was like a new bass, sounded incredible!

I have never been a big fan of Fender bass preamps, but love their basses!

As we all know back in 1981 Marcus Miller's 1977 Jazz Bass was modded by Sadowsky with a Badass II Bridge & a Sadowsky 2 band EQ/preamp,........ I don't know who makes the 2 band EQ/ Preamp's for Fender used in the Marcus Miller signature models,... I have a MIJ MM Jazz bass, 2 years ago I had to open it up to fix a broken Jack wire,.. I remember the preamp had a Fender logo on it. I've heard some people who have played or owned a MIJ Marcus Miller Jazz bass claim that the preamp used in the current MIM Marcus Miller jazz bass has more out put ... I played an MIM model & personally didn't notice much of a difference ... I'm not sure if this preamp in the MIM model's is made by the same people who made them for the MIJ models.

Just to add some more info
Although the preamp in MM's '77 Jazz bass was modified by Sadowsky, it is in fact a Bartolini 2 band TCT preamp. (You can find these on ebay every so often if you want some thing like this.)

Another alternative is fitting the John East Marcus Retro 01 preamp?

Finally, I went to a Marcus Miller bass clinic a few years ago and one of the audience challenged Marcus to play a stock MIJ copy instead of his original. After checking that it had new signature DR strings on it, he duly swapped his bass with the audience member and began to hit it out of the ballpark. Whilst a slightly brighter tone from the MIJ, it just went to show that his sound comes from his fingers (and thumb) rather than the preamp!

Very True,.. I also saw Marcus Miller do a Bass Clinic 2 yrs ago at Long & McQuade Music in Vancouver & was blown away with his tone etc,.... A week later I was talking to the sales guy in the Bass Guitar Department who helped organize the clinic
... He told me Marcus Miller was using his (the sales guys) MIJ Marcus Miller signature model & his Pedal Board,..... the amp used was an SWR 750X (I now own this head)
& SWR 4x10 Golight Cabinet.
Flash forward to this past Summer & I saw Marcus Miller Live in Montreal & he was using an Ampeg Cabinet & still sounded like Marcus .....yes it's all in the hands & technique.
