Hi there, just grabbed a 1974 Jazz. It has a hole cut into the body from years back which has been covered with a plate.

The bass plays well, but one thing I spotted is that the strings seem to be offset to one side which is odd. What would cause this? I see no way of adjusting left/right.

Also (I know this sounds odd) but what do the three controls do? The small one is tone, the middle one controls the volume but only if the large end one is all the way to the end. The final end one seems to change between the bridge and neck pickup but only seems to work about 10% of the way round (ie, fully turned clockwise the neck pickup cuts in fine, but after about 10% turning it anticlockwise the bridge cuts in and doesnt really sound that different from here until wound until the end!)

Often see on Fender guitar and bass .

Just slack the 4 or 3 neck bolts and push the neck down * ( in playing position ) and tightened the bolts . That's it :D

* Look at the strings to be parallel to the neck each side

Well.... it's really hard to tell what you are talking about with the controls. It almost sounds like you have some odd kind of re- wire and a hole in the body with a plate. Pics speak a thousand words. Take a pic of the electroncs (wires) that are in side the body route. Then maybe we can get down to it and help you out.

All the off center stuff can be taken care of -- that's kind of typical of the 70's quality control days.

Sorry to dig this up, but I have tried to straighten the neck by slackening off the bolts but it just goes back to the original position. I am guessing I need to stick some kind of shim in there to get it to stay? If so, can these shims be purchased to do stuff like this?

I undestand you put neck in right place , in center, and it move by itself ?

Only one issue l neck/ body screws are loose !

Yes, I undo the four screws a bit, push down on the neck so all the strings are straight, but when I then tighten it, it just goes back to how the photos are above. It seems as though I need to wedge a couple of bits of cardboard in the neck or something.

Look you neck was not put in center first time at Fender building plant , screw's holes at body side are wrong . They hold your neck not straight with the body . No shim will help .

IMO you must fill all the screws hole , body side and make news holes in the body , not in the neck .

See a qualified luthier if you are able to do some wood work. It is a very easy job with basic tools ; drill , bits and a jaw.
