They are popping up down in Oz - interesting basses.

My thoughts? Don't get me wrong but my thoughts are : I don't care. He's a great bassist for exactly what the band does and he gets a really nice tone but I think if he was in another band that wasn't so famous- nobody would notice him. It's that kind of thing for me. Making artist guitars is a money maker for Fender. Business is about giving people a product they want. In that respect it is a smart move to offer artist model basses to buyers because they sell. It's all good. I personally have been disappointed with the artist model basses I have purchased. The artist basses are to me opperational only in looks alone and do not contain anything that one couldn't find in a regular bass of the same model that is stock for the most part....... My completely stock 01 Fender Jazz blows away a Geddy Lee by a mile soundwise -- but you do get that nice neck with the Geddy. So one hand has something in it and so does the other- it's all choice and we have free choice but you WILL pay money. :D

I hear ya. I'm a longtime fan of U2 from the 80's; not as much with some of their more recent stuff, but I've always enjoyed the heavy bass-lines in their music. I think it is a nice addition to the collection of instruments I have, and it looks nice. But I am assuming it to be basically no more than an American Standard with a matching headstock.

Yeah which in and of itself is pretty cool. It might cost $8000 though. :)

Does a person buying a $1600-$1800 bass really care that it is an artist bass?

When I see this Clayton bass, I see an opportunity (excuse) for Fender to step outside the really traditional background, yet not damage its brand too much. A more modern bass with funky colours, matching headstocks etc.

I love this Clayton bass because it has the colour styling I yearn for in a Fender, though rarely get. That it has Adam's signature is a negative.

Same for this new Strat - for me, this is the styling Fender has lacked to make it a modern brand

Curious!

An artist signature on a bass makes me feel like a I am buying a toy.

Huh… ok…

I'd also like to find a Duck Dunn Signature P bass sometime… 8)

Sure......but you aren't going to play like Duck Dunn because you have his style bass.

All you need is a a high quality bass - then make it your own. There is no point having an expensive Reggie Hamilton bass when:
- it is tailored for Reggie's style, not mine (nor perhaps yours)
- you just need a good bass, and practice a lot. Reggie Hamilton probably started out playing a regular Jazz; the Reggie Hamilton bass exists because Reggie is good, not the other way round.

Beyond a certain quality level, the style of bass is the limiting factor - if the expensive Duck Dunn doesn't suit you, ditch it (particularly when it is probably just just a regular P-Bass that he has adjusted for his personal needs, using regular materials - I am guessing as I have never seen it).

How is the expensive Reggie Hamilton bass better than a much cheaper, though regular American Jazz Deluxe?

I see your point. I guess it's more of a functioning collectible. I do have other basses to play.

I just saw the Adam Clayton film by Fender - clearly he is not there because of his contribution to the bass fraternity.

Well, I guess as long as it is a quality bass, who cares.

Well, why not adding a matching Precision Bass to fit the bill to perfection? The CS produced a pair of Adam Clayton signature P and J-Basses a couple of years ago. Both basses were featured with an abalone block-inlaid maple fingerboard and a champagne sparkle finish. Discontinued and no longer produced.
