I just saw this on ebay yesterday. I think it looks great. Anyone know more about it than what's listed, like limited numbering, list price, etc? Is it already released? What are your thoughts?

Nice looking Jazz. I didn't see any listing on the Fender site for it yet.

I haven't seen anything there either. In fact, only little bits here and there on the web. I put a call into my local Fender dealer to see what he can find out on availability for me. If it will be retailing for $1799, I may be able to get it down to about $1400 through him.

The mass production Adam Clayton USA Artist Series Jazz Bass in Sherwood Green with matching headstock shown in that ebay item is so new it isn't listed on the Fender site yet. Like those oval tuners because they sure do bring back some memories.

The Adam Clayton Jazz was introduced at Summer NAMM only this past July in Nashville and will be added to the line officially this fall along with the Dee Dee Ramone Artist Series Precision. (The Ramone P-Bass is Olympic White with a black pickguard and maple board based on the three 76 P-Basses in that same dress that he favored for a long time. DDR did change the pickguard on one of them to red but the Artist Series model will be the stock three ply black.)

Both these new Artist Series models are coming this fall, as in any day now. So they should show up on line here shortly. Neither will be limited at all, but mass production Artist Series Basses that Fender will sell a bunch of and they will be offered for years at least.

This ebay dealer may be selling a NAMM sample and the price they are asking is probably near or exactly what the retail will be. I can't see this going for a much higher retail than the Jaco USA mass production model, maybe $100 or $200 more at the most if in fact it comes in at a higher retail than the Jaco. The Jaco retail is the same as the eBay price on the Clayton USA Jazz. You may have to wait a few weeks to find out the retail for sure, or call your dealer and see if they can find out. Usually you can do better than Fender retail at a dealer, so this particular ebay item may not be a bargain, just one of the first online.

There has been a gold sparkle (metal flake) Fender Custom Shop Adam Clayton Precision Bass listing at $6,500 for a while. It has a block inlaid Jazz neck. The block inlays are abalone with a vintage 7.25" radius maple finger board. I need to borrow Bono's sunglasses just to look at it. They've been offered for at least 3 years, maybe more.

Thanks for the info and insight BrotherDave. :) Yea, I saw the P bass before. Not quite my taste, and a little too expensive; but I like this one. I'll see what the dealer says.

The body looks like an Am. Std. setup, bridge, truss rod adjustment at the heel of the neck, etc.

+1

Because this bass is American-made.

That would make sense.

I've been looking for photos of Adam playing "this" bass, but they all seem to look a little different. I read that his original is a '64, and that he eventually replaced the rosewood Jazz neck with a maple P bass neck. The version with the Jazz neck has dot inlays and a lower tug bar. Tuning keys are the "cloverleaf" style, too (appropriate for an Irish band). There are probably other differences as well.

The Artist Signature model would resemble like the Olympic White '76 he used to record the best-selling LP "It's Alive!"

Dee Dee had also a '76 finished in Black.

...and the aforementioned Olympic White '76 with the red guard.

In 1985 DD replaced the red guard with a matching plain white and swapped the stock Fender pickup for a DiMarzio P a few months before moving to the ESP camp.

Well I took the plunge and put the Jazz on order. They are supposedly backlogged about 30 days from orders taken at NAMM, according to my dealer. That Ebay auction must have been a sample from the show.

And BrotherDave is right on about the price. $1799. I got a bit of a deal through my dealer though.

That's the way to do it! Congratulations! :D
