I just picked up a 74 Jazz Bass in great condition. The only negative is there is a black tar like substance coming out of both pick up cavities. I suspect it is the pick up covers disintegrating. Can anyone support that contention or have another idea?

Likely it is the foam-rubber pads that were used to provide anti-resonance damping within each pickup rout. They were self-adhesive and stuck to the brass shielding plates at the bottom.

Foam pads to provide anti-resonance damping? Do you really believe that?

The foam pads are there to provide a height adjustment capability for the pickups. That's all folks.

The foam is window weather stripping and you can buy more at Sears or spend a lot more for some replacement foam from Fender.

Fender basses are very practical and you can repair stuff like this on your own workbench.
