Picked up this NOS, 2010 FCS 64JRI. It is really a cool finish and, as expected, and excellent reissue from the Custom Shop. I am just kind of the middle man on this one as I am selling to my tech, but I did take it to practice and have used it the past three evenings as well.

If you get a shot at one of these, I would take it. Really smooth with great jazz sound. The Sienna Sunburst is really nice looking.

Giving it up tomorrow when my tech comes out to evaluate a mini collection of ten basses, and bring them up to speed. I will miss it. The neck feels really nice, and that's a big deal. The finish is great, but the neck just has that feel to it.

I will play it again tonight and tomorrow morning, then say.....bye.

Sienna burst is nice. The jazz with the neck feel is special- they don't all have the mini bassball bat feel. That's what I call it anyway as of now. :D You must find these basses during your travels? You fly back and forth alot don't you?

Yes, I do pick some up in my travels, but this one was on eBay. Handed it over to my tech this evening, he was really a happy camper.

Well, somethings are just meant to be. Received an email from my tech this morning and he has changed his mind about the bass and asked if I would take it back.

HECK YES!

Officially in the collection as of today, picked it up from my tech after he decided against it.

Here is something to think about, while I query Fender. The tech had the pickguard off, trying different combos to "make it his". Under the pickguard, in large letters, is stamped RELIC - which it is not. In smaller letters, is stamped CUSTOM, and, most interesting, there is an X cut into the wood by a saw. I have seen none of this yet as I just picked it up, but thought I would get the some input ahead of the game.

Image

UPDATE: Tech says "custom" is in a cursive script and lightly stamped into the finish. RELIC is about 1.5" long, slightly below and to the right of custom, stamped into the finish, not ink, but indented. The "X" is about 1" long and slightly below and to the right of the lettering, appears to be cut into the wood before the finish was applied as the finish is smooth in that area.

You should document all that you find about the markings of this bass.

It may be of interest to future collectors.

I assume these are not inexpensive basses.

Would you rate this model of Jazz to be better than a Select model Jazz, about the same or inferior in quality.

I was just wondering.

I have to be honest on two fronts here.

First, I have never given the Select much of an opportunity. Basses that I choose to play are passive, and while the Select has that mini toggle to switch between active and passive, not needing the active, I have never given the Select much play time, and do not even own one right now.

Also, I have not had the FCS 64J RI long enough to really compare it to any other bass. My first impressions are very good, but I have only put a couple hours on it as I have been playing that 63 Frankenbass that just came back. I thought the FCS was gone when I passed it along to my tech. It will get a lot more work in the near future.

Okay, those are my two caveats, and with all that said, I like the FCS RI jazzes better than the select. My 60 is one of my favorites to play, and I have put serious hours on that one. I think it is the electronics, in particular the pickups. They just seem to have more body to the sound. I am not knocking the Select, as it is a fine bass, we are talking small, incremental (perceived) differences, some of which might just be between my ears, not in them.

If I had the choice, and could only buy one, I would go with the Custom Shop Reissue.

Interesting Affprod.

The Fender Road Worn series have a "Road W" under the guards stamped lightly into the wood.

A theory out there is that Fender does this to make sure these basses are not sold to unsuspecting buyers as an actual vintage instrument. Typically done on their relics but being a NOS, I don't get why "relic" is stamped on your Jazz.

Curious what Fender says.

Fender is probably covering their liability if one of these basses is sold as an original Pre-CBS bass in the future.
With values occasionally skyrocketing who knows what values will be in the future?

That actually makes a lot of sense.

Steve-

I thought that all Select Fender basses were passive. is that not the case or has the one you own been modified?

The Select I had was active/passive controlled by a toggle switch. Flying right now, but I will try to dig up a pic tomorrow or Wednesday
