I'd like to install a cover on my bridge. Clearly it would affect my right hand playing if I used that part of the strings, but I don't. What concerns me is how it might affect the sound of the bass.

Has anyone found that their Jazz sounds different with the ashtray installed?

Wait for it, but brotherdave will have an answer for this. He's the Fender walking encyclopedia (along with Jlarocho). :D

Well... I did not hear back on the forum. My local mentor suggested it woud not make much difference to the sound unless I padded under the ashtray, which was initially done to make them sound more like uprights.

I decided to go ahead and order one from my local fender dealer. Word back was that Fender does not make bridge covers that will fit over the 2008 American Standard bridge.

So I ordered one anyway.

It arrived. It seems to fit over the bridge just fine. [ CAUTION: The screw holes on the side of the wing are rough edged. While moving the cover around to see how it fit, the metal around the screw holes scratched the finish on the body. ] I may use some pickguard material under the wings to ensure nothing is in the way of the bridge.

So is it installed? Where are the pics?

Installation has been delayed. While figuring out some pickguard mods, I replaced the chrome control plate with a black plate. Your opinion may differ, but I like it. However, it is also my view that the chrome bridge cover will no longer work. I expect to take it to a cheome shop to have the chrome removed electrically instead of by acid bath.

My question then is how to make it black. I believe anodizing would match the control plate, but I'm not sure how to go about having this done.

Has anyone some experience with finishing metal parts in black?

I love the look of the covers on a Jazz bass, but I rest my thumb on the neck pickup, so I only install the bridge cover with that big ole "F" on it. Helps tell the world I'm a Fender fanatic.

I have them on my MIM Fretless Jazz and they sometimes get in the way, but generally (to me) they are a great addition and I get a lot of compliments on the look =)

I love old basses and I got the covers cheap at Musiciansfriend.

If you like the look, go for it

I am looking @ this also for mine.
One question do you have to drill hole to attch this or does it just fit over the existing pickup screws?

I couldn't bring myself to drill holes in my new bass, so, I tried velcro. Covers have been on for about a year and, they hold just fine. I've had them off on occasion and, they've re-attached just fine.

Nice thing is, should you decide you don't like them, no damage to your bass.

The covers are like the chrome bumper and grill on a Cadillac! They are truly Fender and no other bass has them! Oh some copy the bass pickup cover but the large Jazz bass bridge cover with the F on it is something else!

I have them on two of my Jazz basses and I play with my fingers. They are a little confining but the look is worth it. :!:
