What is your opinions on the chrome bridge and pickup covers found on the older Jazz basses? I really like them and want to put them on my bass, but would like to hear other bassists thoughts. Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum.

I am in the process of modifying a MIM Jazz Bass that I picked up cheap. I'm putting the Bridge and Pickup covers on mine. I like the look.

Welcome to the Forum.

I don't like that look, but that's just my opinion. If you like it and you want to do it, who cares what others think. To each their own.

Be sure to post some pics.

The pick-up covers will limit where you can access the strings in relation to your technique. Though for some bassists (Marcus Miller, Will Lee, the late, great p-Bass playing James Jamerson), this didn't seem to matter. For that matter, they used the covers in conjunction with their technique (thumb or palm rest, etc.).

I have them on my bass. For the way I play they aren't in the way. I like the look.

You can get them cheap at Musicians Friend, that way if you don't care for them, you haven't spent a lot and, you can probably sell them on e-bay for a profit.

I've always thought they looked cool but they were in the way on my Jazz basses. I did leave the bridge covers on my Telecaster basses. I had three of those.

I wouldn't put it on mine. Not to say I don't dig it, just that I like my pups showing. It's a cool look, just not for me.

Covers give a classic touch but personally I prefer not to use them .

I find they get in the way.

My originals are in my wife's jewelry box for safekeeping.

I would like removable covers to use to mute the bass a bit, like the Jag guitar has. What do you think the best way might be to go?

So, I guess an update is in order. I put the bridge cover on, but I did some research and found out that my American Jazz was made during the '89-'92 period. So I have a different body shape and a different neck than most standard Fenders. The pickup cover just sits on my shelf next to my Hofner's pickgaurd. Kinda sad, I know.
