My first Fender! I've been a Ric guy for ages. I've played lots of Fenders but this is the first one I've actually owned.

Observations:

The fit and finish is outstanding (with a couple qualifications below.) The hand rubbed nitrocellulose on flame maple top is outstanding on my example. Different from every angle. It really glows.

I replaced the parchment pick guard with a pearoid one to match the bar inlays. The parchment guard is way too much negative space to my eye when contrasted with the busy figured maple. The pearloid guard looks much better.

The neck is amazing. This has to be the best Fender neck I've ever encountered and amongst the best bass necks I've ever played period. Even though it's thin at the nut it still has just enough beef to it to feel substantial. The rosewood fingerboard on mine is excellent. A choice piece of wood for sure.

Tone wise the Select pickups are giving me what sounds like a wider range of tonal options and a good deal more low thump (a much more P-like sound) than a "normal" Jazz, at least to my ear. Impressive.

As to the CONS, there are few. I landed the bass for just over twelve hundred brand new so the price was right. It came factory sealed and fully warranted. The one thing that was weird about it was the "Friday at 4:00" final setup that seems to have been done on it. The factory strings were barely on the posts (I dumped them and put on some Chromes I had lying around until I can get some Pyramid flats for it) and the pickups were completely haphazardly installed. Totally un-adjusted. The neck pickup was almost completely recessed into the body and the bridge pickup was tweaked beyond belief with no two adjustment screws anywhere near to the same setting. After doing a basic PUP setup on it, checking the string action and so forth (excellent out of the box) it's playing like a champ!

So, beyond the surprisingly shoddy final setup that this example seems to have gotten I'm beyond impressed by this beauty. I'm not sure it's going to replace my 4003 as my stage bass any time soon, but it's a CLOSE second in my stable at the moment and on the rise. I can't keep my hands of this pretty lady with the beautiful singing voice!

Cool bass, but that's not a Select Series J Bass. Looks like a custom of some kind.

Judging the first two videos it looks like an American Deluxe J Bass FMT with SCNs.
Discontinued in 2006.

The Active Select is a traditional 20-fret beast without the rear rout. This model was shortlived as it lasted only 1 year and taken out of production in 2012.

This hot chick rocks! :P

And just to be clear, mine is the Select Series Passive Jazz Bass in Amber Burst. The brother to the Select Series Active that you just mentioned.

Sadly, no. I'm a guy in Portland who rocks but that's as far as it goes. ;)

Just a clarification, the "hot chick" is Angeline Saris.

It appears she shares the same tastes with former Jeff Beck's bassist Rhonda Smith except she picked a rosewood neck Olympic White ADJ5 as opposed to Rhondas' maple neck black ADJ4.

Very nice. The girl and the bass.

One of the things that really drew me to the Select Series Jazz though was the more slab type design. Maybe it's the Ric player in me, but I really like the fact that the flame top version does away with much of the rolled off edges that a standard Jazz has. It ends up looking less "big Strat" and more distinct IMO.
