Yes, you got it! Picture showed up just fine. Would have been sometime 1966 or later, but I need the serial number to trace it and give you a fair value.

I will get back to you tomorrow with the number on the back plate as the guitar is at my brothers house at the moment.

Correct. That is the instrument's serial number. Those numbers found on the headstock decal refer to patents granted to Leo Fender and the company.

The bass looks beautiful -- please post more pics to include a shot of the neck plate with its stamped numbers clearly visible.

Arjay

Nobody could authenticate this without seeing closeup shots of front of headstock, back of headstock, front and back of both body and neck and closeup of the neckplate with a clear shot of the serial font. There are lots of fakes out there. Oodles of them. Not saying this is fake, just that I can not say it isn't fake.

Also valuation will depend GREATLY on your LOCATION. Nashville, LA, NYC they bring more. Paris, London, Berlin even more. Cincinnati or Detroit they bring less.

Whatever you do, do NOT sell this before getting a formal appraisal. I do not mean the appraisal you'll get here which may be pretty accurate, but a formal written appraisal by a noted authority that potential buyers can rely upon as factual. In all original condition this could be worth a great deal of money. If it was modified in any manner it is worth far less than in all original condition down to the original solder joints. Non original solder joints can make a $5000 instrument worth $2500. That is why you need it appraised by a real authority in writing.

If you are looking to sell it for sure I'd place it on consignment with an active and noted vintage instrument dealer such as George Gruhn in Nashville or other reputable vintage dealer that does consignment sales. George Gruhn also does ONLINE PHOTO appraisals for a nominal fee.

If you sell this outright to a vintage dealer you'll get about 50% of the actual market value for the convenience of quick money. If you sell it on consignment through a vintage dealer instead you'll pay a percentage of the market value sale price, which is a much better deal for you but will take longer than selling it outright to a dealer which is instantaneous. George Gruhn in Nashville is number one in my book and probably most collectors. If this turns out to be a gem, I'd consign it with George Gruhn and wring every nickle out of it I could.

Trying to sell this yourself is a minefield fraught with peril. If it appraises at $5000 you'll be lucky to sell it locally for $3500 in a private party sale unless you have connections to sell it in the vintage market. Do not let prospective buyers know where it resides. Some of them will be casing the joint and come back later for a five-finger-discount. If not selling this immediately, you need to have a rider added to your homeowner's insurance to cover it for fire and theft. If all original and authentic it is probably worth more than you think. You should have the serial number recorded in a safe location in case it is stolen. Thieves love old Fender cases and their contents.

We are all waiting on more photos and the serial number from the neck plate. It is the metal piece with four screws in it on the back. Write that number down also in case you need it later.

I put your serial # into guitar dater project and this is what came back: "Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1974"
This coincides with intel from Fender here -> http://www.fender.com/support/articles/u-s-instruments-product-dating/

I would email Fender Customer Relations and ask for all information for your serial number.

You would be wise to follow brotherdave's advice and get a photo appraisal from Gruhn.

I agree with Brother Dave's recommendation of George Gruhn. They do all my appraisal work. Their website, www.gruhn.com, will tell you all about the different types of appraisals available, prices, and first steps.

This particular bass, IF it is in all original, excellent vintage condition 74, with original case, has a book value of $2500-$3100, per the Vintage Guitar 2014 Price Guide. As BD said, to get an actual value it has to be appraised. Price guides are just that, guides, but I find them useful when purchasing basses.

Not to muddy the waters further, but there is often a significant difference between an appraised value and an actual market value. Market value is driven by actual demand in a specific geographical area.

Thanks for advice guys. Its a strange one as my mother always thought that my father bought the guitar in the late 60's before she met him. But you are the experts thats why I posted.
