I'm looking at purchasing a 74 Jazz Bass from guy who doesn't know a lot about the history of the guitar, as he's not nearly the first owner. It's clear that not everything is original on the guitar - a Badass bridge was installed at some point, has new pickups and the tuners have been replaced. However I'm more interested in the neck and body being authentic 1974 parts. Here are some photos - perhaps some of the experts can chime in with their opinions. Everything seems era-accurate, neck plate included. Appreciate any input.

I am no expert, but as no one has jumped in, I will. Dating the neck and the body will require taking the bass apart. Take pictures of all numbers and stamps on the neck paddle, heel, and in the routes under the pickups and in the neck pocket. There would also be date codes on the tone and volume pots if they have not been replaced as well.

The only thing I can say for sure, based on these pictures, is that it is a 75.

Also the control knobs are not stock, so there is a lot wrong here. A 3 bolt necked Jazz is not my first, second or third choice in a Jazz. I just don't like them much. It was a bad idea. I'd bet you dollars to donuts that George and Leo had a good chuckle over the CBS 3 bolt necks. The only way I'd buy this is if I could get it really cheap so I could resell it quickly. I wouldn't want to be stuck with this thing.

Still there is a market for this stuff since decent vintage stuff is getting to be outrageous again. If any of you out there are thinking of getting a vintage Fender there is no better time than NOW. But I'd pass on this thing. It is just too fragged.

Thanks for the advice so far - I'm only considering purchasing this one because I can get it fairly cheap - $1200 AUD. Also I realise it's from 1975 now not 74. As it would be the first bass I've purchased I'm not too fussed, but at the same time I want to get a decent instrument and at that price it seems to be an alright deal...

The three bolt neck is fine. The third screw (the one at the bottom) is actually a bolt and it is threaded through two steel plates, one attached to the neck and one attached to the body. There are plenty of three bolt necks still around on Strats, Tele Deluxes, Jazz basses and Telecaster basses so they have passed the test of time, even though they may not be favored.

BTW -Leo used a three screw attachment on the MusicMan line of basses and guitars as well as later on G&L basses and guitars so they must have thought it to be an improvement.

Julnino- That Jazz bass originally had black Stratocaster knobs so it wouldn't' take much effort to restore that part of the bass.
What concerns me is that BA bridge. If it is countersunk into the body, that is a permanent modification and the price should reflect that and be adjusted down.
