I just picked up a 1990 Natural American Jazz Bass and I am unable to verify the serial number in all of the lists online. It also does not use a 3/16" allen wrench for the truss rod.
It is a smaller size and I am unable to get a good fit with a metric or SAE wrench. It seems to be somewhere between 4 and 5 mm.
The serial number is E 90601. The lists I checked do not show E+5. They all say E0,1,2,3...+ 5,6,... etc.

I removed the neck and found both the body and the neck stamped in 1990.
I believe it says Hector Montes on the neck also. It is a tilt adjustable neck with the adjustment hole in the neckplate.

Natural finish. Dot inlays on the neck. Has Jazz Bass and MADE IN U.S.A. on the headstock. And the serial number is directly below the Fender Logo.

Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis

And there is such a thing as a 4.5mm allen wrench.
There's one that size in my kit.

Does your bass have active electronics? (Does it take a battery?)

I am wondering if what you have is a Jazz Bass Plus, because if you do I have one and I can check mine for what truss rod wrench fits.

The one problem with those hidden truss rod nuts is that you have to feel for a correct wrench fit and that can lead to a burred up rod nut that won't fit any wrench correctly.

Hex key nuts are very resilient so there is hope that we can find the right fit for you.

You may want to take it to a reputable repair shop if you are needing the neck adjusted now.

Thanks for all of your input.
Electronics are not active, but the tone control does have a center position (you can feel it when turning it).
I will post some picks.
I do indeed wish to adjust the truss rod.

It's a modified Boner Jazz Bass.

The cheesy Strat knobs were replaced with chrome dome types and the original parchment pickguard was swapped out for a matte black replacement from WD Music.

As for the clicking detent in the tone knob I can honestly say your bass sports a TBX circuit.

As Dropbox doesn't allow hotlinking I suggest you to upload your photos using a Photobucket account.

Thank you Chromeface for the info.

I had never heard of a Boner Jazz Bass before.

Here is a photobucket slideshow link:

Let me know if it works. Thanks.

Why did they use different truss rod wrenches on these?

How are these models considered? Rare, desirable?, junk?

I need to adjust the neck for action and a rattle it has...

I never played those basses, therefore I'm unable to help you fixing your issue.

In your place I would take this bad boy to an expert and ask for a complete setup.

Why not sending a PM to Brother Dave :?:

Beautiful axe, though! :P

Thanks again Chromeface.

I like it too.

The rattle is a loose tuning peg handle. Easy fix.

I usually do all of my own work, but this truss rod may need some extra attention.

The Boner Jazz Bass sports a BiFlex truss rod which can be adjusted using a T-handle 1/8" long-reach Allen wrench.

Even with the StewMac tapered 1/8" truss wrench, no way I can tighten the rod to remove the bow. Looks like I will have someone look at nut or rod replacement for me if it is affordable.

Thanks for everyone's input!

Hey, I also have a boner jazz, and been tempted to adjust the truss rod to avoid some fret noises i get sometime due to low action.

Did you get to know what tool is needed?

I'm a newcomer here and spotted your post. You do indeed have a 1990 Fender Jazz bass. I have one very similar and not too far from your serial number. Mine was also stamped by Hector Montes as well, Feb 8, 1990.

1/8" is the correct truss rod hex size. I'm curious if you were able to tame the warped neck or not? The neck on mine has similar issues and now, the truss rod has snapped. I managed to remove the parts, however it looks like installing a new Fender truss rod means the neck must be further disassembled. Could there be some other truss rod configuration that would accomplish without taking the neck apart?

Thanks,

Kevin
