Hello all,
I've got a '83 Jazz standard and the original owner replaced the original bridge with. Badass II. I would quite like to change that back to original. Does anyone know what the part number is for the stock bridge and if they are available anywhere?
Also are the one piece scratch plates still available?

Would like to make it more original in appearance.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers

jack

You'll likely find everything you need for restoration on Ebay.

The one listed in the second row down in the Fender Parts Dept listings (top of this page in accessories - parts tab) might be close. Keep in mind that some of the BA bridges did not have the same screw pattern as the original Fender bridges...

+1

And even if the mounting screw-holes line up, the BA bridge typically leaves a visible imprint on the bass's finish because its base plate is larger than that of a stock bridge.

Hi Volcanium103, The modern bridge suggestion was correct. The 83 Jazz used the Fender chrome 4 saddle 5 screw bridge with the single groove in each saddle for the string. The modern Fender part number is 0040798000 and they are available from a variety of sources I use for online parts ordering including Darren Riley and Guitar Parts Resource. Mr. Riley's link to them is: http://darrenriley.com/store/fender-standard-bass-bridge-0040798000/

Even if you knew the part number from 1983 it probably won't match this number. All the numbers have changed but this is the most correct one I can find and is likely the exact same design.

Unless the pickguard has some serious issue, or is already non-original, I'd not change it to a reproduction. The WD pickguards are reproductions. They are good if you don't have an original one though.

Know that whatever you spend on it really will not add to the value unless you can get all original Fender parts which would not be nearly as easy to find as a modern stock type bridge and reproduction guard. So do any parts changes for your own pleasure as you will not see the value go up. Keep the original solder joints intact if they are presently intact.

And yes as mentioned sometimes the BA bridge will leave indents, but not always. It depends on how aggressive the installer was. Should be easy to check that. Just loosen the screws a little and have a peek. If indents are there, there's no real harm in leaving the BA on. Many players prefer them and they are more stable.

The look of the final CBS incarnation of the Jazz is quite unique and the larger pickguard with integral control plate with the push-on Strat style knobs was carried over to the first few years at Ensenada for MIM Jazz production. It is a different look for a Jazz, but there is nothing inherently "wrong" with it. It is just a little different. The neck binding with dots instead of block inlays appealed to me as I was never a white block inlay fan on a rosewood board, but I did like the binding.

FYI... bound dot Jazz necks were first introduced during the second half of 1965 (if my memory serves). CBS switched to the full «tuxedo» look the following year.

I'm sure that Brother Dave had no idea.

And FYI were also on the one in question. So what is your point? And who came up with the tuxedo name for the block inlays?

+10000 :) I'm curious with regard to that one myself.... Tuxedo?? I'll stick with calling them Block inlays.

The original Bridge can be purchased here on the Fender site for $34.99 provided you live in the U.S.A I live in Canada & have tried to purchase parts a couple of times & I always get a message saying that you can only purchase from the site if you live in the U.S.A. in any event here's the link.

The "tuxedo" descriptive refers to any Jazz Bass neck featuring both the block inlays and the fretboard binding when used against a contrasting fretboard material. Thus, the "chocolate tuxedo" applies to a rosewood board with white binding and white MOP block inlays, while the "vanilla tuxedo" connotes a maple board with black binding and black block inlays. I've never known any variation of "tuxedo" used to describe a maple board with white binding and white MOP block inlays -- apparently those necks are so few in number that they never rated a nickname.
