Can I use headphones directly connected to the bass guitar?
Would it fit the active preamp, or should I use headphones amp?

There are a few variables at play here, the primary ones being voltage and impedance. Both are at a state of mismatch plugging phones directly into the output jack. On a passive guitar I would be surprised if you could hear anything at all. If you did it would likely be very faint. An active guitar would likely be slightly louder but it still would not be a good match. You should use a headphone preamp.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

For headphone practice, get an emulator pedal like a Tech 21 Sansamp Bass Driver or a the much cheaper Behringer BDI21. Plug the bass into the pedal. Plug the pedal into a little microphone mixer, plug the output of the little mixer into the AUXILARY input on your computer soundcard, plug headphones into the computer headphone jack. This sounds great.

I was hoping to save all the connections and cables.
That's why I rather adopt the headphones amp idea, thanks.

Use a cheap pocket amp with a headphone output, cause I doubt you would be worried about your bass sound if it is just for practice.

I too use a Behringer, model XENYX802. I think it was $50-$60 on sale, around there anyway. I have my computer hooked into it. If you have a wireless transmitter, like a Line 6, you can go in wireless from your bass to the mixer. And if you have a GOOD set of wireless headphones, you can come out wireless as well. I say GOOD, because I tried with some old, generation one analog ones I had laying around, and was not happy with the sound, at all. (Come on kids, get the old man a nice set for Fathers' Day.) It's actually a nice little mixer and does all I need for a good practice session.

In principle, you are completely wireless and free and quiet.

Another advantage to what Affprod and I do is that you can RECORD direct on the computer. I've yet to find a headphone practice amp that actually sounds good.

I went for the VOX AMPlug Bass model.
It works great, sounds great, although build seems a bit sensitive - I wonder if and when will start to take apart. I need to be gentle with it.
Another thing - the controls are very small, cannot read anything written on them -
need only to feel them with my fingers so I can tell what I am doing.
P.S. It deals quiet well with my active bass, e.g. Fender MIA Deluxe Jazz Bass.
