So I've played bass for about four years and just picked up a new jazz bass, and so far I'm loving it. Me and my band just started picking up a steady flow of gigs and i need a good bass amp. (I've been going through my VOX until now) Whats a good brand, or amp in particular that sounds good, is cheap and is fairly loud?

Welcome to the Forum.

Check out the Fender Rumble Series. Remember you can always mic a smaller amp.

thanks, yea we've done that to my vox a few times because i was afraid of blowing it with my bass.

Yea, i hadn't considered that. We have a fairly good system so we could get a smaller amp and mic it.

thanks.

You're Welcome.

I just recently picked up the Rumble 25 and I have to keep it turned down pretty low to keep peace with my neighbors.

I Just bought the Orange Crush 35 watt. Its pretty sweet, the sound is great, and can really get down and dirty (if thats what you are looking for)

Im also in the market for a new amp, one with power but also one that is fairly small/portable.

If that's your bag, check out the Genz Benz Shuttles or Mini Mark Bass Heads.

If you wanna go all out then Mesa Boogie all-tube amp heads are the sex!!

There's so much to choose from though, it's hard to make recommendations without an criteria.

I'm thinking about getting a Genz Benz Shuttle 3 with it's 8" cab counterpart and a larger Aguilar cab.

Another option that has awsome sound is the Sans Amp bass driver DI. With it you can go direct to the mixing board or looped with your current amp, the amp becomes a monitor. I use it direct for one group I play with and hooked up to my effects loop on a Fender Bassman 200 when I play with another group.

I'm probably gonna get one myself.

I will second the sentiments for the Sansamp DI. I would go and get the programmable one though. It saves 3 stomps and only costs $10-$20 more. All it takes is the turn of the knob to get the perfect tone. Check it out!

I've been using a Peavy amp for my bass. It works pretty well for me. The Rumble series is great, though.

the rumble 100/210 is a good, portable, loud bass amp.it comes with mid-scoop to eliminate the popping which is nice too.

As bassist, the rule of thumb...get the powerful amplifier you can that sounds they way you want it to for the $.

You going to need to move air. Depending on the volume of the gig (usually dictated by the genre and the drummer), the amount of power is going crucial to the performance of the amplifier.

If you are on a tight budget, the Fender Rumble combo bass amps should meet your needs. For gigs, the 100watt should cut it if the stage volume is reasonable and if your are not driving hard on a contra B. The 100 watt mode has a 15" speaker and a tweeter to add some hi/fi that the 15" wouldn't produce (cool).

The 25 watt model is cool for home/studio use and a gig at very low volumes (drummer is using brushes, etc...)

Anyway, here is a link to the Fender Rumble amps.
Please read the details.

First how much do you want to spend? If price is no object then you can't go wrong with an all tube Mesa like the 400+ (NOTE Mesa is discontinuing this 20yr old head though). Markbass puts out some really killer solid state heads and cabs that are lightweight but a s^%t load of power in the 500watt range. I'm looking to save up for a Markbass F1 500watt head that weighs ~4 lbs but costs ~$800.00. Also try Eden heads, but the cabs are a bit on the heavy side since they are old school and don't use the lighter neoydimium (SP??) speaker magnets. The only Fender amp I use/have is a BDEC for just farting around. I'd assume their Professional Bassman line should be good.
