Hello all....

I had a CIJ Geddy Lee a few years back. Sold it off for another guitar.

Looking to get another...but now I'm confused.

And I apologize in advance, knowing this is the official Fender Forum. My questions are in no way meant to offend anyone...

I think the Geddy is so popular due to the neck. The alder body seems to be commonplace....

I can't afford the $6000 for the CS version. Frankly, I'd much rather have the red flametop or the seafoam green version.

soooo, my questions....

1) can the "thin C" neck be found on any other Jazz? I'm reluctant to buy a Mexican Fender. If the "thin C" is available on another model--I could just do a refinish??

2) since the original Geddy was CIJ...is it easier to find a Japan Jazz online?

3) if all this is moot...what does Fender "Custom Shop" start at price wise? Surely you could have a Jazz built for $2500?

4) failing all these options....is it worth it to buy licensed parts, like Warmoth and just DIY?

Thank you in advance for any helpful advice.

Tony

The regular-production GL Jazz Bass is now made in Ensenada, Mexico. I believe it's available in both black and 3TSB finish.

I just re-read my initial post...and it makes half-assed sense.

Let's try this--

I'm aware of the MIM black and sunburst.

I'm reluctant to buy those for two reasons

1) made in Mexico
2) pearloid block inlays!

I can find a bunch of Japan Jazzes with pearl block inlays...but will their necks be comparable to a Geddy neck? Or thick crappy baseball-bat necks?

If I can find a comparable neck, preferably on a US model, then I could just buy a pearl block maple neck...and have it refinished in Seafoam.

I think (with the utmost respect) Fender dropped the ball with the CS...it's just black. Again....

Hopefully this clears up my thought process, and what I'm attempting to get

Thanks!!

I love the Geddy Lee necks but I wish they made the cheaper versions with the peal inlays and binding

The American Special Necks are similar to the Geddy Lee Neck (but they have dot markers),.... keep your eyes peeled on Ebay or TalkBass I'm sure a Jazz bass with a pearl block marker neck will show up, ... & if you live in a big city check out the pawn shops,...you'll ocaiasionally find a gem there,..... Geddy found his Black 72 Jazz in a pawn shop & then more recently he found another 72 & 2x 74 Jazz basses,(I should mention that these basses originally had Black pearl block markers & geddy had two of them fitted with customshop necks with white pearl block markers)... so it's possible to find what you're looking for in a pawn shop. I'm also a Geddy Fan & I love the Pearl block markers,..... I have a Marcus miller jazz, a select Jazz & a Candy Apple Red Vintage Hot Rod 70's Jazz Bass that all have Pearl block markers & a 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 with natural finish that has Black pearl Block markers..... I must say that the Black Pearl Block markers with black binding on the current American Deluxe Jazz basses are very striking,... especially on the basses with Natural finish, Black, White Blonde & Sunburst finishes. (but the sunburst comes with a rosewood fingerboard.)

Yes they are,... I have a 2006 CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz Bass that I'll never part with,.....a few months ago there were 3 CIJ & MIJ Geddy Lee Jazz basses for sale in my area on Craigslist,.... have you tried Craigslist,... to be honest there are a lot of Japanese Geddy Lee Jazz Basses floating around you shouldn't have a problem finding one as they only moved production to Mexico in 2012.

This is the HARDEST thing ever.

All I want is...a Geddy Jazz neck carve with pearl blocks instead of black. I'd even be willing to take a normal Jazz neck with pearl blocks...

I've tried the "build it" option on Fender...the body color I want isn't available...but MIGHT be later.

I can't afford Custom Shop (not a lot of people can)

I can't use a Miller neck on a Geddy body---3 hole neck, won't work

I can't buy an Amer Vint 74 model...different neck and the body is Ash

To quote a friend of mine..."there's a whole lot of somethin and a whole lot of nothin"

So really...Fender offers a whole lot of options, but never really the guitar you want.

I'm a little frustrated with this whole endeavor. I'm hoping they expand this "build it yourself" program. But I have a feeling it'll die by next year.

I'll be left putting together a Warmoth parts Jazz and kinda liking it.

I would rather give Fender my money...odd that they don't want to take it...

Oh well...thanks for the comments and advice.

So frustrating....

I went through the same search 2 years ago ..... I wanted a Geddy Lee Neck with Maple fret board, white binding & pearl Block markers,..... my search was futile .... & remember Geddy had black block markers until 2010 when he had to have his neck replaced on his main Black bass,... Fender Custom Shop made him a neck with Pearl block markers for his main bass & then made him a 2nd neck with maple board & pearl block markers for one of his other basses,.... the only way you're going to get extactly what you want at the moment is get the Geddy Lee Custom Shop Bass,..... The Candy Apple Jazz & Sea Foam Jazz basses that Geddy owns are also Custom Shop Basses,..... again your search is futile unless you go to Custom shop & dole out the $$$$$$$$$.

Hi James...

Well, this scenario plays into a bigger observation of Fender and their products...that I don't think I should comment on, since this is an official Fender forum, and they're nice enough to host it.

However....

The "design you own" program could be a SIGNIFICANT cash-cow for Fender, if they would just...be more forward thinking.

I'll use ME as the example.

I am VERY appreciative that Fender answered my email quickly...but their answer was lackluster at best. "We might implement they later"....

Sorry...but, the customer is always right...and we're talking about a piece of bare wood that's gonna get painted anyway....

The answer SHOULD have been "it's not currently offered, but we can handle that request easy"....and bam!---they just made a $2000 sale. Instantaneous.

Further to that, it becomes a story that I spread around about them going "above and beyond"....y'know what I mean??

I like guitars from Poll Reek Smythe (see how I didn't mention a competing manufacturer there?)...and they are particularly accommodating. Sure, if it's a stupid request, I'm guessing they add on the "pain in butt surcharge"...but guess what...I'll gladly pay that surcharge so I know I'm getting the genuine article.

I think a lot of people feel the same way.

You mentioned the Seafoam Jazz....

THAT is the bass I'm wanting.

That...is the bass the CS SHOULD have done, instead of just another black version.

However, I'm not in charge...soooo, there ya go.

But in a way...we, as Fender consumers, ARE in charge. We can tell the company what we'd like to see as a new release and hope they listen.

If not, you do the "vote with your wallet"...and play something else.

Like I said though....it takes next to nothing to personalize an order for a "design your own" Jazz....and I'm disappointed by the response.

I suppose I could go two routes at this point

1) buy used....and refinish
2) buy Warmoth licensed parts and hope for the best....

Just bummed out....

Hey I totally hear ya,..... when I first saw the design your own guitar thing I thought ...cool!! I will finally be able to get the Jazz bass I want with Maple board & Pearl blocked markers,.... then I checked it out & found that the options were limited,....
I also this Custom shop should of put out a version of Geddy's Candy Apple Red Jazz or his Sea Foam Jazz,.... Both are beautiful Basses..... & Leave Geddy's main Jazz bass as MIM.

It truely is sad that you can't design the bass you truely want,..... that's where Music Man & Carvin trump Fender,.... you can custom order the Bass of your dreams with them...

Hey...

This creates a weird "void" for Fender....

I'm willing to spend about $2000 for a Jazz

Some may say that's a lot for a Jazz, but that's my budget.

I certainly can NOT afford $6000 for the CS Geddy...and even if I could...I wouldn't as it is WAY too close to what's readily available being the CIJ or MIM Geddy Jazz.

So, the obvious answer is Fender's "build your own"...right in that sweet spot for a player willing to spend a bit more...

But there's no wiggle room...frustratingly!!!

So, it's either $800 or $6000....and it's that lack of choice that I find....for the lack of a better word...insulting.

I'm sure this will surprise no-one...but Fender headstock logos are rampant all over the net. To build a Jazz knockoff...takes virtually no effort.

I don't really want to give my business to another company--I like Fender basses....

But, we'll see what happens. Maybe this "design your own" program will expand, but I'm not holding out much hope.

Tony

So you want a Fender Jazz bass with a 'C' carve maple neck with pearl inlay and a
Sea Foam Green finish.

Will that be a white pick guard or a tortoise shell?

I know one is out there somewhere!

Good luck finding your bass.
