I bought this on ebay about 10 years ago. The seller advertised it as a 62 fender jazz, but people were skeptical. I bought it anyway and have been wondering. The neckplate says Duncan and it's stamped Seymour Duncan in a couple of places. The serial seems to be stamped at the end of the neck. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Photos are here (I hope).

Thanks.

This is a Seymour Duncan promo to demo their pickups at dealers probably made in Korea by Samick or Cort. Someone put a Fender reproduction decal on the headstock. No it is not a 1962 Fender Jazz Bass and is NOT genuine Fender but it probably has real Duncan pickups. Probably worth at least $150 though and you don't see many of these but this one is not a stock demo instrument and you were cheated. Maybe 02 in the serial on the neck plate means 2002 made. Not sure. Guessing about that but not guessing about it being a fake Fender.

You could tell by the smoothness of that neck pocket that it wasn't a Fender.

That is the first Duncan guitar/bass I've seen. There can't be very many. Too bad about the fake Fender logo.

I know this has to be disappointing, and I am sorry your were the victim of an unscrupulous person.

The fact that the hardware has been aged intimates that this was not just a "slap on a logo" and walk away, but an intentional attempt to (further) deceive.

I would talk to SD. I have seen "salesman's samples" before, and I think this likely started out as one. I think the stamps are correct to the bass and that this was meant to showcase their pickups. That likely means the electronics are pretty darn good, too.

Not to overstate the negative, but once you have the bass inspected by a professional of your choosing, if he/she agrees it is not a Fender, please remove the waterslide decal from the headstock so some kid, generations from now, does not think he is buying a Fender.
